Any varminting late May?

This year, I will be visiting the USA from Australia to attend the Super Shoot for the first time. I have a week after the SS to fill in, and was wondering if there is likely to be any kind of varminting available around the last week of May?

My 8 year old son will be with me on the trip, and he is a very keen hunter. I thought it would be good if I could take him out on something relatively simple, like prairie dogs, squirrels, etc.

I am pretty flexible in this week, should would be interested to hear any suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Lots of woodchucks (groundhogs) in Ohio. No prairie dogs. Squirrel season is in the fall.
Ohio also has coyotes, fox, raccoon, & crows. Coyotes are open season like woodchucks, but you would have to check on seasons for the others.

Fergus, my wife and I won't be getting to Ohio until about mid June. Otherwise, I would invite you down to central Ohio for some long range groundhog shooting.
Say 'Hello' to Walt Berger for me.

One more thing, Fergus. You will need either a 3 day or annual non-resident hunting license for you (I don't think your son will need one). And I think you will need a hunter safety certificate.

And you will need permission from the farmer that owns the land. But that should be no problem if you explain your situation. And Kelblys may be able to assist in finding a location/farm.

Guys

Thanks for the information - it is appreciated.

I should also add that I am not limited to just Ohio. I can go further afield if it makes sense. I fly out of the USA from LAX, so could start heading back that way earlier.

Dave Berg, your Scotland friend's rifle stock looks a lot like this one. What part of OH is home?

Nope, I was too busy looking at "other" things to notice your pickup. ;)

Wow. Small world. During summer months, we park our RV near Bladensburg, OH. Some of my wife's family live near Centerburg, OH, so when we visit we travel thru Utica and Homer. Where in PA? I grew up NW of Pittsburgh.

The rifle I pictured has a Richards MicroFit stock - Wildcat Thumbhole model, camo laminate.

Fergus, there should be plenty of woodchucks within 50 miles of the Super Shoot. For prairie dogs, you would need to travel to the western Dakotas, Wyoming, or Montana.

Fergus ---I could put you on prairie dogs in montana if you wanted to go that far. If interested e-mail me deanbrown@sasktel.net

But if he goes more than 50 miles (west especially) they're slim pickens on chucks.

Good call on the advice about permission slips.... They are getting harder to get too. There is some local idiot that has been shooting from one farm to another where he has no permission to hunt, over farmers, over cattle, over houses, near churches on Sunday that has made it kinda tough sledding to get a permission slip. A few of the farmers I've talked to are pretty worked up about it. WD

You shouldn't have a hard time finding a place to hunt groundhogs. I'm a farmer and am always happy to show people places to hunt. I'm in northeastern Indiana which looks like I'm around 250 miles away from there though. Unfortunately, I've got more groundhogs and ground squirrels than time. I trapped 140 groundhogs and killed a couple hundred ground squirrels last year and could have gotten many more but I started getting bored.

Hmmm, Hosted, if I lived a little bit closer to you, I would offer to do my best to eradicate all groundhogs and ground squirrels for you - via rifle.
