Have you considered the Sightron SIII 10-50x? I bought a NF 15-55x to use for the same purpose you describe and like it a lot for both tasks. Later I bought the Sightron for the same purpose and consider them equals except the Sightron is a little bit bigger and no zero stop. Considering two Sightrons will cost less than one Nightforce comp, I would go with the two Sightron scopes if I was to do it again.

I think NF is ok for me , I'm just not enthused with the fine cross hairs on the NF

I'm curious what Larry has against the Sightron. James Mock wrote up a very positive review of the one he tested and I've never read anything negative.

My NF has the DDR reticle which has .125 in dot. Perfect for sage rats and my level of vision. I think the newer DDR-2 reticle has a smaller dot, and I know the fine cross hair reticles are really fine. Part of what drew me to the Sightron was the MOA-2 reticle. Was looking at the Vortex Golden Eagle at the same time...have you looked at that one?

I have no complaints about my Nightforce other than they are expensive. Have you read the Alex Wheeler scope review? I've not had the problems he described, but it is something to consider.

I remember when that Lupy came out. I thought they offered an interesting reticle that was empty in the middle. I think at the time i went with the NF and one of the reasons were the much easier to read turrets for my getting older eyes. Since then i ended up with March scopes for other reasons........;)

How can you go wrong with any of these? For my money, money matters, then it's the reticle and glass. I have three Sightrons, 3 Vortex pst viper and 2 leupold. I would like to see a Leupold 6 7 42, love the Golden eagle but the reticle is just too fine.

I've owned both the NF and Leupold.

The Leupold, in my opinion; is a slightly nicer scope. Glass is amazing and eye relief is more forgiving. Field of view is better as well.

For long range, as @MTlager & @Jet both alluded to, the Vortex GE 15-60x56 is very comparable glass and quality, at a far more reasonable price. Have one with the ECR reticle and like it very well.
