Any reviews on the Savage A17 ?

We go on a prairie dog hunt every year around June or July and bring the normal rifles 22-250, 223 and a few bolt action 17 HMR's. Last year we got into a town where the pups were all over and within 200 yards, perfect for the HMR. So I was thinking about getting a Savage semi auto 17 and for about 550.00 I can get the savage A17 in the varmint configuration which is about half the cost of a Volquartsen. I was just wondering if anyone has any first experience with the Savage A17, like accuracy and reliability?

Thanks
Darrin

A friend of mine bought one in a varmint thumbhole he says it seems to be fairly accurate with no reliability issues thus far, but discouraged about all the plastic parts

Hmmmm.... Plastic parts huh? I guess I'll need yo go handle one and look at this. I just liked the idea of having an auto to shoot faster. There's usually 3 or 4 of us and you have to be quick or you'll loose the shot. We're Like a bunch of 50+ year old kids at Christmas time when we're out there.

Puz, if you could be talked out of a semi-auto, take a good look at the CZ 455, very high quality, all metal and very accurate plus a 5 min. Interchangeable barrel system it allows you to shoot 22 long rifle 22 mag and 17 HMR , they started about 300 well worth looking into hope this helps

Already have a few bolts and one main reason for the A17 is an extended aftermarket mag capacity.

I have the A-22 which is the same gun only in 22 magnum. Shoots about a 4 inch group at 100 yards. Feeds perfectly and has zero issues extracting and ejecting. The biggest problem I have {besides the stellar accuracy} is that it wont set the rounds off reliably. Works perfect when it does go bang, but as far as getting it to actually fire the rifle is very unreliable. It's as if the hammer spring is weak.
I really like the system. This rifle actually has a locking bolt. Tried several different brands of ammo, just not a very accurate gun. Best advice is steer clear of it.

4" groups ... Not bad huh? Well I haven't received any encouraging news so it looks like I'll be sticking to my bolt guns. I do appreciate the honest feed backs.

Thanks

Tons of first hand owner experience at rimfirecentral.com.
I had an early one. Trigger was worst I have ever had, probably because entire fire control assembly is plastic. They put lipstick on a pig w the nicer laminated stocks. Great concept, but they went too cheap with the design.

My Savage A17 is deadly accurate at 200 with Hornady ammo. Magazines are a headache.Get the wood stock
yeah the so called magazine is why I wouldn't buy one. A friend has a Savage bolt gun in 17. The mags suck.. Sometimes he gets a geyser of ammo right out the top.. He spends more time messin with a magazine {he has 3} than shootin most days.. My CZ 455 in 17 just keeps on shootin. I have a 10 rd mag and two fives.

My Mags aren't that bad.I bet I have 600 rounds thru with out cleaning. But its now saying "Clean me now" and I will. But I also have a CZ-527 that is lazer accurate.

Won an a17 couple years ago in a raffle. It’s the only gun I have ever sold. I did not like the stock, finish, bolt design, trigger, magazine, or anything else. I would be surprised if other brands at that price point were as bad in all areas. Jmho

I was one of the first kids on the block to get one. I was really looking forward to a semi auto that could sling tiny projectiles at 2,600 FPS.

Unfortunately, my opinion is Savage didn't execute it very well. The magazine and trigger are the weak link.

It remains one of the few fire arm purchases that I regret
