John Hinnant has a great book , but I would find a smith to mentor under .
Machine shop tooling is very dangerous . I don't think books could show you proper safety set ups . There's nothing like a lifetime machinist showing his bits that are missing to make the point .
Another periodical , Home shop machinist . Great how too articles , meaning how to make tooling not just buy .
If there's no retired smiths willing in your area , I suggest a trade school or junior college , just for the basics .
Safety first , no long hair untied , no jewelry , good lighting , good footing , no loose clothing , always , ALWAYS have safety glasses on !
Good luck , and if you were in s Florida , I'd be willing , if you pass the serious test .

YOU DO! THE BEST GUNSMITH BOOK AVAILABLE ANYWHERE IS centerfire accuracy BY w. hambly-clarke jr. IT IS AVAILABLE FROM black duck publishing. IT EVEN HAS A LOT OF "PICHERS".

by South Bend Lathe....South Bend ,Indiana 46623 is a handy learning paperback that covers tool grinding, threading etc. etc..
