Any one use Varget with a .260 Rem?

My rifle really likes 38.0 grn of Varget but I know the speed was a bit under what I want for 1k+ shooting. I managed to find a very aaccurate and smoking fast load with 140 Amax and RL17

What is this Varget you speak of.

One of the temperature insensitive(B.S.)powders distributed by Hodgdon.

I'd take a 1Lb CAN of Dupont IMR 4064 over a 20yard end dump of any Hodgdon powders!

(OH,that's right....I have enough Dupont IMR powders to last me a lifetime!!!!)

Call it hoarding if you wish...I call it PRE-PLANNING!!!!!!

Ive been loading 260 for several years now and have used Win 760 in several bolt guns. Try it if you have any around, its the same as one of the Hogdon powders, I think H414. I am going with lighter bullets in the 260 gas gun and have tried IMR 4350 and IMR 4064, results look promising.

I used to use varget almost exclusively in my 260. I mostly shot 130 gr Berger vld hunting bullets with it, excellent accuracy.
Use magnum primers, I have read of hang fires with varget, as the case is nowhere near full.
Never had an issue with mag primers.
Another powder I have found to be great with 140 class bullets is H1000. Case is completely full, crush bullet in and shoot. (Can't remember the charge off hand)
Velocity isn't that fast, but Very consistent and accurate.

So tell us how you feel! ;D

But seriously, tell us your relative experience with Varget and IMR 4064 in terms of temperature sensitivity.

I recently got a Tikka CTR .260 and about to start loading for it.

Got couple pounds of fresh Varget on hand and 100 Nosler 100 gr. BTs, so would appreciate anyone's data for those.

After I run through the Noslers I want to step up to 123 grain Scenars and get them going fairly fast for use on elk in Colorado this fall. It sounds like I need to start looking for H4350, but wonder if someone has data for Varget on those bullets.

Thanks,

Dan

I don't have data for 123 scenars, but wanted to point out that there has been many a forum discussion and articles about how scenars are not good hunting bullets. I would look elsewhere in bullet selection for a hunting load. Lately I've had good success with 127gr Barnes LRX bullets for hunting. (As well as Bergers, Hornadys and others.)
