Any luck with 105 gr pills and a 1-9.25 twist in a .243 Win?

Has anyone had luck with 105 gr pills and a 1-9.25,or even a 1-9 twist) twist barrel in a .243 Winchester?

Came across a sweet deal for an assortment of 105 gr 6mm bullets. Comprised primarily of Berger 105 gr VLDs, with a mix of AMAX's and JLH's.

I have a 1-8 twist .243 barrel as well but I leave that for the 115 DTAC and Berger VLDs.

Going by Greenhill's formula, a 105 gr bullet at 1.220' in length, average, before trimming the meplat) traveling @ 2800 fps at the muzzle needs a 1-8 twist. I reduced the number to 1.15' and the formula allows for a 1-9 twist.

Guess I should just load a few up......unless someone here tells me not to bother.

TIA

223Rem,

I have seen Hor 105 Amax shoot in a 6mm rem factory barrels,9.25 I think). And the 105 Berger's in a 8.5 tw. I don't think you would get a Berger to shoot in a 9tw.

I have used 8tw for what I shoot.

You should buy the bullets regardless, if its a sweet deal. I'll buy the 105 Berger VLD's, and possibly the JLK pills off of you if they don't work. Thanks, G

Shot a .243 Savage 12FV in F Class all last summer using 105 AMax and 107 MKing. In the Ontario Provincials, won the three day Grand Agg for Factory Rifle. Not trying to brag. Just saying that the 9.25 twist didn`t seem to be a problem. I cringed a bit when I initially saw the '7 & 8 twist barrels only' on the MKing box but a compressed load of 46.5 gr RX25 was very accurate right out to 1000 yards. Chronod at 3050 fps so the velocity may have helped.

Gentlemen, thanks for the replies. Guess I just need to load a few up.........as I was told the 1-8tw Shilen I have would just marginally stabilize the 115s. However, this is not the case with my barrel.

I've shot 105's -107's out of a .243 Ackley with a 9-twist Hart barrel with no difficulties. The same bullets should shoot out of a true 9.25 twist if you push them pretty hard.

Hello,

I have a Rem 700 VLS with a 9 1/4 twist and it seems to shoot the 105 A-Max just fine. It can touch 5 shots at 100yds,not saying the shooter always does his part) and the best group I've got at 600yds is 3 1/4', 5 shots, nothing great great, but I'm happy.

I have used the 105 Gr match Bergers in my Remington 700 VLS 1 in 9 1/8 th twist. Berger made them specifically for the 1 in 9 twist rates. My son shoots them into 1 inch groups at 400 yards with my rifle.

I used the 105 AMAX in my Rem 700 VLS with a 9.125 twist. They didn't fly sideways but the did have a bit of yaw. The group was ok but I had better groups at 400-500 yards with 70 & 80 bullets. I might have been able to launch them faster and fully stabilize but was already at the max recommended load and without a chrono.

I've loaded 105 amax's with retumbo out of a Savage sporter barrel with a 1-9.25 twist that shot great out to 600 yards. The 1-8 Shilen will stabilize the DTAC, that's what I'm told from a friend that is shooting them out over 1000 yards.

1-in-9 1/8' twist stabilizes my 105 Speer Spitzers well, so what more can I ask? I prefer 100 grain premium bullets, which decidedly stablize, settle-down, and hit 10x all day long. The right rifle; the right SCOPE; the right attitude HELPS immencely. Love 100 grain Partitions; 100 grain Grand Slams! Even the 90 grain Swift Scirocco II has its purpose! cliffy, generally dead-on

Having trouble with Amax 105 and 9.25 twist Rem 700. Seem to be all over the target. If I drop down to the 95 it's one hole. Gotta be the twist is a bit too slow. Seating the bullets out a ways for powder capacity as well. Would seating the bullets deeper have any impact on this problem ? Obviously there is a sweet spot with all guns. Just curious if I should waste any more time and materials on this subject or just get an 8 twist barrel ?

I don't know how much "all over the tgt means" but it sounds to me that another 150 or so fps ain't gonna tote your note.

Been using 4831sc with around 42-44 gr, REM cases, win primers. Must just be that the gun doesn't like the bullet. All over the paper means inside 3 inches at 100 yds. Soom holes not .243 diameter but torn as if the bullet wasn't flying properly.

Even though the thread is from 7 years ago, data is still valid......

Mine's a new SPS 243 Compact model with a 20" tube, and it seems to like R-15 & 105 Amaxes at 2935 OK......
