95 Gr SMK and a 1/10 twist .243 Winchester

Got a really great deal on an AR10 upper chambered in .243 Winchester with a 20" SS Lothar Walther 1/10 twist barrel. Plans were to keep the upper, bcg, charging handle and sell off the barrel and free float tube which would basically cover the cost the of what I orignally paid.

After thinking it over and doing some quickloads calculations I should be able to get the 95 gr pills close to 3000 fps which would be more that adequate for 600 yards shooting. Only problem is that Seirra reccommends a 1/7-1/8 twist barrel for the 95 gr SMK.

I used the length of the Berger 95 gr VLDs I have on hand and plugged that in the Greenhill's formula which gave me a 1/9 twist. Maybe a 1/10 will work? Has anyone had success with the 95 gr SMK in a 1/10 twist or could you please tell me the overall length of the bullet so I can see what Greenhill's suggests.

Instead of Greenhill, let Mr. Lothar Walther tell you. Load up a few and fire them, 107SMK's aren't supposed to stabilize from a nine twist but don't tell my Hart 9twist in 243 ACK that as it's the best shooter I have. You may be on the edge but only firing a few will tell you. Good Luck

Greetings,
I shoot the Berger 90gr HPBT match bullets in my 1-10" 22" barreled .243 coyote rifle. They are a phenomenal bullet and definatley worth trying. 100-7x @ 800yds on the LR target was proof enough for me.
Good luck,
John

Once I got the upper, I broke it down following my orignal plans so I never had a chance to shoot anything. Of course I used the other parts for another build.

That is some good news gentlemen......thanks.
