Any/Any Shooters

This may have been discussed at length previously, but my search-sway appears to be lacking this AM.

For those shooting Any/Any rifles, or sling supported w/ a scope.

I'm interested in knowing of your optics choices, preferences, & experiences etc.

I'd like to know your preferences for tube & objective size (30MM probably the leader), reticle, FFP, SFP, variable power (settings used most often), or fixed?

When I have taken the time to look, or ask, it appears that Nightforce seems to be the leader as far as brands go. Although, Sightron, Vortex & the occasional March are represented as well. If you have a dark horse brand preference I'd be interested in learning about same.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

IME 12-24 fixed power 1” tube. 1/4 to 1/2 moa dot. Too much magnification accentuates the wobble, and too much weight is just that when in a sling.

My ideal scope would be 12-36 30mm sfp with a .5moa dot on fine crosshairs. I use lupy, Sig, Sightron, and Nightforce. Most top at 25x and that is where they are run at 600 and beyond. Short line crank down so you can see the number board in the field of view. Both course rifles wear Sig Whisky 3 scopes right now.

I have two Sightron Siii 6-24x50 with the .25 dot on fine crosshairs. That are bullet proof reliable and allow me to hold off just fine.

The only change I’m considering is finding an old Leupold fixed 24x with a target dot and target turrets. There would be a weight savings there (up top where it matters). I don’t think I’ve come off of 24 power for 300, 500, and 600 yard courses of midrange prone yet, and I’m in Florida where there is a wee bit of mirage.

Large objectives serve no purpose, we don’t shoot in the dark so they can become “sails” in windy conditions. Straight FXIII 25x with a 3/8 min dot gets most use. A 1” tube is fine, but 30mm is better for 1k if you don’t have elevation built into your base. I have a Leupold mark 4 8.5-25 that I use for 1k, it has TMR reticle that I would love to change to a normal dot.

Nighforce track well, but be careful of the additional weight.

I've been using a Vortex 6-24x50 SFP/MOA on my .223 Eliseo when I shoot it as an "any" rifle in mid and long range matches. It never leaves 24X. If I had more magnification, I'd probably use it, but at 24X I can easily make out the rings at every yardline unless mirage really kicks up at 1000 yards, but nothing is going to cut through that much soup. It's not the lack of seeing that's causing me to lose points, it's my hold and missing wind let-offs and switches that get me.

On the rare occasion that I shoot any / any, and it has been a couple of years, I use a Vortex HST 4-16x44. I have shot some big scores with that scope. That said I wish Leupold still made the VX3i LR.

I have been shooting any/any for years and for the 600 yd. line it's a NF 8-32 with a NP-R2 reticle. for 1K it's either a NF 12-42 with the same reticle or a March 10-60.
As an aside note, those of you that are concerned about seeing your wobble area. It's always there, don't let it get into your head that you are all over the target. the wobble area is the same at 10x as it is at 60x. I routinely shoot with all the power that the conditions will allow.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I have been shooting any/any for about 25years. I have a Nightforce NXS 12-41x56 with the FC2 reticle which was installed upon my request as it results in a .4moa moa at 42power. I need a large dot because I need to see the dot against a black bull and pulse/wobble makes it difficult to follow the dot if too small to make an accurate call
.
I also have the Sightron SSIII 10-50x60 with the Silhouette reticle that has a 1/2 moa dot. My main concern in choosing a scope is the size of the reticle dot. Scopes with half moa dot are very rare at a decent magnification. Another consideration is reliable adjustment knobs which is also a problem with most scopes. Glass clarity is also nice.

As another poster has said, the big scopes can catch wind and move your rifle around in the prone position. This happens when the wind is from 15mph and over which can move the aim point to the 8-ring or worse on the 1000yd target.

I'm shooting a Burris Signature 8-32 with probably a 1/2 dot that I bought around 30 years ago. Works well, has 1/8 clicks. Just bought another used one with maybe a 3/8 dot last week and trying it out.
