Many / Any Service Rifle Shooters here ?

One of my mementoes from service rifle days:

Another from the 1971 Nationals when M16's were first allowed in DCM matches; the USN Mickey Mouse Team. We decided to get those shirts from Disney and their woman I called said that was a great idea so she sent them to us free shipping at Quantico Marine Corps Base where the Interservice Rifle Matches were being shot. The Army and USMC teams applauded our brave venture.

I fired the first shot in the 600 yard stage of the Camp Perry National's EIC leg match. Made an estimated come up from 300 then estimated the fast changing wind dope and put it on. A huge crowd behind was watching those little rifles performing at 600. Fired that shot. Target stayed up, then finally sank slowly into the pits. A few seconds later it came up. Spotter was shallow in the 10 ring at 8. Crowd behind me shouted "Yea Mickey Mouse." Finished the match first with a 476-?X. Not great but I and the other teammate got sight dope for the USN team to use on our Redfield International rear sights in the next day's team matches.
I still have that Tee shirt, I actually wore it today. So cool seeing the history.

AR-15 biggest piece of crap that ever came down the pike!

"There aren't enough officers in the military today that understand marksmanship enough to make up a baseball team!"

Carlos Hathcock

Probably the same individuals that pushed for the M16 to be adopted as the Service Rifle!!

How many national records are still held with the vastly superior M14? Before or after scopes were allowed?

Former Service Rifle shooter (M14, M1A). I shoot mid range and long range sling now when I can find the time and money. Looks like there are mpre of us on this forum than I thought.

Hi All,

As I stated in another recent thread I'm new here. USNM is the only forum I have spent time in over the years but I have been an active member there for a long time. I don't have a lot of time for forums but this one looks nice and I like the layout / interface.

I could be wrong but from observing here so far it seems the audience here is 90+% F class and Benchrest.

I am very active April thru October each year shooting Service Rifle only ( except for some indoor pistol in winters ). I do enjoy 300, 500 and 600 yard and 3 x 600 Prone matches. Thanks to scopes allowing me to ditch the old post sight I even made NRA Master Mid Range this year with my service rifles. I am also the range governor for a 16 firing point 600 yard range in South Eastern NH ( www.nfga.org). I have been very active for years working at attracting and retaining new Service Rifle Shooters.

Are there many or any other Service Rifle shooters here ..... :) ?

Thanks, George
Didn't know that anyone actually used that forum any more. I started that forum...seems like ages ago. At least 20 years.

Quit using the pogo stick in 98 as the sights turned exactly opposite of my prone rifle and I had bigger fish to fry at the time. Had a couple of 199's @ 600yds with the AR in 94-95, but my eyes just weren't quite good enough to score a 200. Got the shield and HM in that 95 timeframe as well....had no other personal goals after that with the AR with the exception of what we were doing with the Eagle Arms/Armalite Team (95-98). In 94/95, fast-twist barrels were offered, JLK had an 80gr low-drag projectile for 600yds, SIE had 69's for 200/300yds, Milazzo had a 2-stage trigger, Krieger had a free-float tube, shooters modified their rear sights to be more repeatable (1/2 minute) and nothing else really existed for the AR at the time to increase NMC scores. It was kind of a pioneering era with the squirt gun and it could pound out some really hard scores if you put your mind to it. Once they added optics to the mix a few years back, you just knew which way that scores would be headed.

Would have entertained firing the AR again if the NRA had kept their Tactical class "ALL AR15's", but NRA knew better and it's now a dead class before it really even got started. Thank Walt for that nonsense.

Now I have my AR's set up more for tactical and personal defense. After 4 back surgeries through the VA and a 5th en route inside of 2 years, the days of position shooting and run/gun are behind me. Still fun to sit at the bench and amaze the deer hunters with a hard hitting AR :)
