Hey, I made up one dedicated LR rifle with Tubb .160 reamer freebore for 112- 115 bullets. I have another barrel that I want to chamber in same 6xc which is my 'truck gun' for deer, varmints and steel. I like the 112-115's but my concern is mag space because at .020 I dont have much left for throat erosion. So I am thinking about getting another reamer with a shorter freebore, which seems to be std at .105, or sending mine back to Manson to have it cut down to 'x'. Anyone have any input on what would be the ideal feebore for 87-105 gr bullets as this is what I would want to shoot? I guess I could figure it out myself as I have a chamber but willing to hear out actual real life opinions! Thx

I smoked a nasty ol pig with my 6xc saturday evening.

Set it up to shoot 105 berger vlds whatever you do... you wont be sorry. I used to shoot 600 f class with it. Great round, smoked most of people i shot against in the few shoots I did with it and berger vlds.

I dont remember my freebore tho...

I am using the Tubb designed reamer with 0.160 freebore. Shooting across the course it has worked fine with bullets from 68 Bergers and 70 SMKs to the 115 Bergers and DTACs. I regularly shoot cleans at 300 yards with 90 gr Bergers. For a truck gun the reamer you have will work fine.

Ah the 6XC my favorite. I bought my reamer from bullets.com back when they were a thing but don't remember what the free bore was off the top of my head. My go to bullet in mine is a 105 Hybrid. It works wonders on deer punching quarter sized holes on the offside with broad side shots on deer out past 700 yards. They don't go anywhere.

Hey I believe you guys but it is so counterintuitive for me. I have been shooting 223 since Jimmy Carter and my nice groups always had small jumps like .015 to kiss. My 6br likes max .020 and now the .160 6xc, with small bullets shoots loong jumps!! Maybe the secret ingredient is the 1.5% leade and wider throat?

The only reason I can think of as to why Mr Tubb designed that reamer with such a long throat was to be able to squeeze in a bit more powder. He appears to be velocity driven, for obvious reasons.

edit: I just did what I should have done before posting! What I was not accounting for is bullet shape differences. Here are 3 pics in order of 87vmax - 105 Berger hunter - 112 Barnes mb all seated .020 off the lands with a hard kiss. ( too lazy to clean chamber first). No issues with neck grab. The 87 surprised me. No more concerns - the Tubb reamer it is!!

Yes, exactly as I told you. The 160 frebore is actually ideal for the 87 VMAX. Especially if it has to jump. I think it's actually ideal for a lot of bullets and people are running way too short of a free bore.

David Tubb designed it that way because it's designed for the DTAC. I told you that also...

My 24" 6 XC, RemAge, Criterion, Barrel, 1-7.5 Twist , has .104 Free Bore and works, SWELL with, 80 gr. Flat Based, Berger Varmints thru, the 107 SMKS and 108 gr. Elite Hunter, Berger's.
I would DO "this" FB for Up To, 110 grain Bullets, AGAIN,.. in a New York, Minute !
I usually Shoot, Under 800 Yards, tho and I have, NO need for, the 115 D-Tac's !
Free Bore WILL,. "Grow on you" Anyway,.. in a Few 100 rounds,. LOL !

I have three 6xc reamers. I have a 50, a 100, and a 160. A 104 is a very good free bore for just about anything, but going to the 140 to 160 range lets you use the 112's and the 115 still shoot the other one. I like both the 160 and 104 I have used that free bore in both 6BR ackley and 6XC.

The thing i’m not too hot on is the fit in the mags with the long bullets. Not much space left with .020 jump in my steel AI mags. Need to find other mags with no backer plate. I ordered a couple of MDT plastic mags and they were no better. What you all using?

Have you ever given a farther jump a chance? Have you tested it? I think you owe it to your self to at least give it try. You might be suprised on how well some of these bullets like .030, .040.050, .060, .080, .090 or even more jump. That little 87gr V max has shot well for me all the way out past .060 jump. Its very very tolerant of jump like the 70gr Sierra Match King and the 85gr Game King. 1/2 MOA pick up gun with 85gr Game kings jumping .080 off the lands...

Definitely - I will try that once hunting season is over. My ranges are up in the woods in an area where guys are buck hunting now so will wait until next week when season is over and Wx is permitting. Frustrating cause I am dying to shoot the 6xc. I see my 6br barrel gathering dust. Same cost for components and just 5 cents more per shot for powder.

@ Tesoro,..
I'm just using, a New Rem 700 standard Factory, Box Magazine for, the Short Action rifle.
My 107 gr. SMK's seated to,.. "Jam" in My Chamber are, 2.690 COAL and I believe that, the Steel sheet metal "Box" is, 2.800 long. I have NO Feeding Issues, HENCE WHY,.. I chose, the 6 XC Cartridge.

I bought a couple of mdt mags..probably made for them by magpul and look about the same as yours. if you push the cartridge down inside like I did in my pic then you get a better idea of the clearance. But it works!
