Any .358 Winchester shooters here???

The .358 Win. has to be one of the best dang brush cartridges ever made. Came out in two beautiful rifles way back when, the Win lever 88 and semi-auto 100. But Winchester chose to promote the .284 in those two rifles pushing the .358 into the backgound and it never seemed to recover. Ask a clerk behind a counter in a gun shop now about the .358 and he visibly ducks, pretending he never heard you.

I built a .358 Win. back in the late 1980`s - Rem 722 action, 22 inch McGowen barrel, synthetic stock. You could mail order a barrel from the U.S. into Canada back then. Now it has to be done through a dealer. A gunsmith living on a farm near Listowel, Ontario put the barrel on for me. Very nice job.

Used RCBS dies to reload. My records show best load was 200 gr Sierra SP over 48.5 gr IMR 4895. Chronod at 2450 fps. Regularly put 3 into one inch at 100 yds.

Had a lot of fun with cast bullets. Most accurate was RCBS mould 082154 that throws a 180 gr g/c. Used 17 gr SR4759 to produce 1400 fps. Best group was 3 into 13/16 at 100 yds. Also tried Lyman mould 358315 that throws a 205 gr g/c but it wasn`t as accurate. Never tried the lighter pistol bullets.

Shot one deer at 50 yds with that rifle in Grey County on a great uncle`s farm. Went down like it was electrocuted. Bullet went clean through the chest into the bush behind.

In a moment of weakness I traded the .358 on another rifle that I no longer own. Am seriously thinking of buying a Ruger Hawkeye in this great cartridge.

I built one a few yrs ago....used a 16 Savage action and a Pac Nor 12 twist tube at 21" in length...great cartridge to say the least...fun plinker loads using 357 158 gr JHPs at 2100 fps..or a max heavy load using a slamming 250 gr Hornady..@ 2400 fps.. brass is easy necking up 308s with Redding FL die & tapered button....have never dropped an elk with it...but I'm sure any elk inside of 300 yds is in trouble...glass on mine is an Elite 4200 1-6...

I bought nice remington 760 in 35 rem and had it rechambered to .358 win. I had the barrel cut to 20 inches and a set of leupold QD mounts with a leupold 2X7 scope.....I think it makes a dandy deer killer. Probably not as good as my 30-06 but close. I use the new hornaday lever revelution 200gr bullets. I do 90% of my hunting with a remington pump gun.

Heading to the range tomorrow for a final sight check on my Ruger 77 Hawkeye 358win. I was out last weekend and was very pleased with my range time; was printing consistently less than an inch. I'm sighting to my calculated MPBR (297yds) for a Hornady 200gr Interlock over IMR3031 (max book load). Really loving this cartridge/rifle combination. Hope to have a field report on the 358win's performance in the next few weeks.

I've been using one since the 70's in a old style Ruger model 77. Any deer hit with it was DRT like Thor had used his hammer on it. Love that cartridge.

I built one in the early eighties on a Browning-Sako action with a 22" Douglas Premium SS barrel and a Brown Precision ultra light stock. I put a custom peep sight on it with a fiber optic front sight. I later installed a kick Eez pad on it. The gun weights 5 1/2 pounds and is a dream for still hunting. It has harvested many deer and moose with Noslers Partition 225grs. Here's a photo:

I just ordered all the parts to build one off a 700 action . Plan on using it for a once a year trip to Texas to shoot wild hogs . Does anyone else use one for this ?
