Any 225 winchester shooters here?

I have a older model 70 225. It doesn't shoot worth a crap. I've floated the barrel and glassed the action. Still not much luck. I have tried ww748 imr-4064 imr-4350 imr-4320 and H-380. Bullets that i,ve tried have been 50-55 gr vmax, nosler bt and sierras. 1" is about the best I can make it shoot.
It has close to 500 rounds through it. Open to any help or suggestions

Is the gun's barrel clean? It may need a good scrubbing clean job. Also you may have to experiment with bullet seating depth to shrink groups. One of my buddies has a .225 that he bought new and his is a tack driver still after ~40 some years. Also if you have access to a bore scope, have barrel checked out.

I have one of the non-Winchesters in 225W, the Savage 340V. It is an accurate rifle with 4064 powder and 52gr. Sierra hp. and with the Sierra 63 gr. a teenage young lady friend used it to kill three deer in three years, one shot each year. I feel it is equal to any 22-250 in equal quality rifles.

even though i didn't end up buying it i had a look at a 225 win rifle that has won a victorian benchrest competition. I don't know anything about the calibre except that its obviously super accurate.

my experience with the 225 is that it shoot almost any 22-250load minus 5% with the 53/55gr Sierras.

i used 4064 and Sierra bullets with t9 1/2 primers and is shot in the .500s

No advice here, I have zero experience with the .225.

That said, man, those mid-late '60's Model 70's with the pressed checkering are some awful ugly rifles, but if I ran across one in .225 with the varmint weight barrel in good condition and a decent price, I imagine I'd jump on it.

I have one in a win Hi-Wall and Hart barrel. it is a great rifle...but then so is my 219 Donaldson Wasp in a Sister rifle, about the same really. Both are very accurate and plenty of power, just a tad shy of the 22-250.
To your question, once again...check barrel and clean as necessary for copper and carbon and make sure it is free floated!

i picked up a win 70 225 win 65 varmint , and i was scared about the crown shot some factory ammo out of it and got shy under 1" worked up a 4064 load 30.6 grns with a 55grn hollow point and man im getting 1/2" the only thing i dont like and need to change the trigger , anyway back to the crown it looked like someone cleaned from the wrong end , it shoots very good so far but i still might take it to my buddy to be recrowned , check that crown ive been told its a very good action and there quality fell off after the change but i love this rifle its heavy and just bleeds the old days of varmint hunting it wont be leaving its all mine now ;D

good luck the 225 is a awsome round people forgot about

I have a Hi Wall in 225 Win, also. It has a heavy 28" 16 twist barrel (unknown maker). My best load to date is 33.0 Varget ( 1/2" groups) with FB 55 gr Sierra's. I've tried 4895 and 4064 (not as good as 4895). I have but, haven't tried FB 50 gr Sierra & Hornaday and FB 55 gr Hornaday plus Win fmjbt. I'll post on the other bullets by spring :) I'll try to get a pic, too.

Dont have225 but look for a constriction at the end of the chamber...carbon ring..ruins grouping with all combinations of powder and bullet..

Bob,
I'm in Oregon and bought it here but, it could have come from out of the area. Mine has the close couple DST triggers and a varmit type stock. I'll post a pic in a day or two.

Bob,
Here is my 225 Win. Hi Wall. Does it still look like the one you had?

All looks close however the foreend and pistol grip area of mine were checkered, also i had no cap on the front of the forend. nice piece though, wood is great.

trigger, guard, cocking lever etc all look right.

you have a nice one but i do not think it is the one i had.

thanks for the pic.

A great cartridge handicapped by the rifle it first appeared in. In the late 1960s Winchester was taken over by bean counters looking for maximum return on minimum investment.

As said earlier those push-feed M70s were god-awful ugly and suffered from production shortcuts such as blind magazines. I recently looked at two used M70s from that time period in a local gunshop. Made me shudder.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But unfortunately firearms manufacturers have fumbled the marketing of many fine cartridges. The .225 Win, .358 Win and 6mm Rem are examples.

The .225 Win is fully the equal of the .22-250 or .220 Swift.
