Accuracy Issues with 17 Remington

Contacted Shaw about the barrel and they said that fouling inside of 20 shots is just the 17 remington and there is nothing that can be done to improve it. They recommend cleaning every 20 rounds at most. I asked about lapping the barrel and they said it would void the warranty (which there is not a warranty as I bought it used) and it would not improve anyway. I do not believe that 15 accurate rounds is the best I can hope for with this cartridge as others are saying they are getting accuracy for longer strings with better barrels. I am seriously considering doing the 1000 stroke JB patch or may just send the barrel packing. Maybe this is just not the caliber for me and I will stick to my 17 hornet if I want to shoot .172 bullets.

That kind of response sounds like a lot of what has haunted the 17 Remington along with other 17’s. If that’s the best Shaw can do I would look else where and move one. I have found a lot of the issues were that folks didn’t understand stand it, so talked poorly of it. Has been a huge amount of improvements with components since it first came out. Yet a lot of the initial issues have been addressed, some just have to keep repeating what they have heard forever and little if any hands on experience.
I used a Shilen select for my 17 build and it does fine for way more than 20 rounds.
I wouldn’t give up on the cartridge because of the barrel, but that is your choice.
My 17 Remington sees nothing but 25’s and 30’s.
A 17 fireball may be more to your liking. I stay with the lighter offerings and 4K FPS is easily obtainable. I can load down to 17 Hornet speeds as well. The 17 Hornet is a good cartridge but feeding of the rimmed cartridge and brass issues were why mine went down the road.

Once again...you may want to try the Dyna Bore Coat. It's not magic but it does help most factory-ish barrels. Then again, even if DBC doubled your round count before cleaning was needed, that may still not be where you want it to be.

Since you don't have much to lose, I'd try lapping it myself. The fire lapping process may be useful (bullets embedded with lapping compound). On a few factory barrels, I've applied JB (about 800 grit) with a bore mop along the length of the barrel (stopping several inches from the muzzle) and fired 5-6 rounds with naked bullets to smooth things up. That has the advantage of not lengthening the throat like true fire lapping does. The JB is fine enough that you're not going to hurt anything.....other lapping compounds are also available if you want to get more aggressive. -Al
