Anschutz dual extractors?

How do you tell if your 54 match bolt has dual extractors - Would a ejector and extractor be one in the same and the other extractor be an extractor by itself?

Tim,

Presuming you're looking at photos with the bolt closed. This isn't foolproof, but if the very back of the bolt is flat, there is likely to be just one claw. Two claw bolts almost always have a slightly domed cap*.

In a Match 54 the extractor and ejector are different things. The ejector is a little stud in the breech (it also pins the cartridge tray into the receiver). The claws are the extractors. Single claw bolts usually extract cases, but don't eject so well. The idea is the claws hold the case, pulling it out of the chamber as you pull back the bolt. When the case hits the ejector stud, it stops, and the spring-loaded extractor pings it out. In practise, cases often drag on the breech and dribble out of the claw too soon. Anschutz fitted the second claw (on the left) from about 1964. They call it a cartridge holder, as its job is to prevent cases pivoting out from under the extractor under friction. It works pretty well.

*talking about 14xx bolts. 16/18/19/20xx bolts all have two claws as standard.

Precisely, the left hand claw is not visible.

This site is a great place for the less experienced to learn. We all have to do this somehow, and sometime. Glib replies are fine, if followed up by an informative answer. Glib replies on their own are not helpful.

Anschutz Match 54 single shot target rifles that are pre-1964 will have a single extractor. As Tim Slater notes, the back end of the bolt is flat. In addition, the receiver will have dovetail grooves on the rear part only. In other words, no dovetails forward of the loading port.
