I replaced my spring once a year or if it starts to shoot low. since my rifle is an early match 54, I have to use Wolff springs since original springs are not available. My 54 msr is stored de cocked when not in use. Spring hasn't been changed since in 5-6 years.
Is there a preferred spring and how often should I be changing it ?
Thank you for mentioning if it's shooting low.I replaced my spring once a year or if it starts to shoot low. since my rifle is an early match 54, I have to use Wolff springs since original springs are not available.

Thank you sir. I'll reach out to Mr. SteppSeveral have had horrible luck with Wolff in 54’s, including myself. This was a while back.
If at all possible get OEM springs and make sure that includes the small one for cocking indicator
I just sold my last spare to Joe Besche. all my Match 54 had them or a 5018 with the correct sear catch. if you have one you might have to grind a relief for the cross pin the holds the sear catch in place.Anybody ever put a 5071 ( I think that's the number in an older 54?)

A lighter pin hit from a weaker spring can cause ignition problems and POI changes. during warmer temperatures not so noticeable but in cooler temperatures I see POI go lower and my rifles are not tuned for a low POI I know time for a spring change.Thank you for mentioning if it's shooting low.
I performed the same sequence before and after lunch yesterday and the averages speeds repeated to the number.
One magazine of Midas + that had been in the fridge
-ammo temp 42 degrees, ambient 50. velocity avg 104
One magazine that was in the warm house and then exposed to lower outside temp
-ammo temp at 62 degrees ambient 50 velocity avg 114
.5fps change per degree of ammo temp is very similar to what i've recorded shooting in the summer.
Is .5fps normal or function of weaker spring that shows up in ignition?
Any change in POI?Interesting. Twice I ran a test where I backed off the Anschutz 54.30 bolt spring knob to the point of misfires. The chronograph showed no significant change in extreme spread or standard deviation.
I was testing the myth that a weak spring caused the group to open up. In that one rifle it didn't. Perhaps consistent spring pressure is more important than spring strength. But I am curious now. If I find the time I'll test the POI shift.Any change in POI?
That is correct consistency and not how hard a hit is the key to a good ignition. too hard a hit can cause more problems than a weak spring.I was testing the myth that a weak spring caused the group to open up. Is your 54 MSR a wing-safety model? My 54 msr is stored de cocked when not in use. Spring hasn't been changed since in 5-6 years.

Two-pack Extra Power Striker Spring Anschutz 54 with .195 firing pin.My 54 msr is stored de cocked when not in use. Spring hasn't been changed since in 5-6 years.

I honestly do not know. From the description (54/1400) series it should be the longer spring for the older rifles. My 54 BR gun has a 1400 series action from '69 and it's a long spring. I have several extras but they're not in the original package. Not even sure if they're Wolff or Anschutz springsTwo-pack Extra Power Striker Spring Anschutz 54 with .195 firing pin.
@PWNolan do you know if these are for older or current models?
Those are for the pre 1977 Match 54 with the wing safety. there are two diameters the early 1400 series before 1977 which uses the 0.195 diameter spring and the 0.220 which are exclusive to the so call 1600X actions. 1977-1979Two-pack Extra Power Striker Spring Anschutz 54 with .195 firing pin.
