Another Tikka t3x magazine modifcation

I was all excited to try out some of my 75 grain ballistic tip loads in my new Super Varmint. Then I quickly remembered that they are too long for the factory magazine. I was not about to spend hundreds of dollars to solve this problem. Especially since the two extra mags I have only cost me $5/ea.

My methods of cutting apart the magazines went between a small hack saw, an oscillating tool and a red hot X-Acto knife.

I had a piece of aluminum flat stock sitting around so I used that for the new backstop in the magazine. A little bit of hobby epoxy held it in quite well. 3DBEFBB9-B11A-49CD-8941-05891674CA58.jpeg

Continuing on to the bottom half of the mag, I cut away the bar that keeps the follower in line. 0A3A643D-F371-4343-BD39-751DC5CE7B61.jpeg

I added to the back of the follower with more epoxy, this time I mixed in some of the plastic shavings, just because.

It’s not pretty, but it works.

I was having feed issues because the follower would not lift the back of the cartridge up high enough. My solution was to install the spring upside down and backwards. E6D2C50A-6AE4-4B52-97E7-4F185A3D2173.jpeg
All done.

I’m in the middle of doing the same thing. Only I am molding the new modified mag box and follower. Then pouring new mag box and follower out of a special polyurethane resin. Essentially allowing me to make as many mags as I want. The only problem is needing to steal the leaf springs from existing mags. I might try a mod using a compression spring at the front and back of the follower.
