Another storm . . . Hurricane Issac

Well, my family and I are here once again waiting on another storm, Hurricane Issac!

The way it looks, the eye will pass right over us in the morning hours.

It's starting to get windy and I am starting to get reports of rain in the area. It's going to be a long night. We will have a lot of down trees which will knock out the electricty. This will be the worst part for us around the Baton Rouge area. New Orleans and south of NO will get the worst of the storm.

Doesn't look like the wind is going to be to bad, but the rain and flooding is what we are going to have our eyes on. Anytime it rains over ten inches within a 24 hour period, local flooding is going to be bad.

Keep your prayers and thoughts with all of us in Louisiana as tommorow is going to be tough for all of us!

Dennis

Hey Neighbor,

I'm north of you in Central La, same Scenario here. Expect flooding and a little wind. We need the rain but could do without the electrical outages. I live in a very rural area and my power is sure to go out, and with the wide spread damage Entergy will be so swamped that it takes a long time to get my power back on. We are hoping for the best and keeping all envolved in our thoughts and prayers.

Done did Dennis!! To you and all your neighbors!! Keep us posted!!

Lets hope it peters out without widespread damage. And yes I will pray it doesn't cause havoc for those involved.

The eye was suppose to pass right over us sometime in the early morning before daybreak. Now they are saying sometime tomorrow afternoon!

Just Waiting ???

Just a quick question but why do they keep rebuilding? The place gets wiped off the map more often than the country borders in Africa but we keep rebuilding the place. Praying for your safety but wondering why people insist on living in a seasonal lake.

This question has been asked several times over the years.

Our abundent industry and resources keep us going and keeps Louisiana growing. The Mississippi River is the central gateway to the lower 48. The area between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is the largest shipping port in the country. I am almost certain we have the largest sugar cane industry in the US.

I could mention several other things, but it's getting late and I am going to try and get some sleep before morning. The above is the best answer I can give you. But if you think about it, the entire country has it's disasters, you just pick up and keep going forward.

Dennis

I didn't think of that. I had completely forgot about the Mississippi river and its proximity to New Orleans. That must get expensive for those shippers to dig out the delta every time a storm fills it back up! Just goes to prove you never know what you might learn on Accurateshooter.

That's pretty much an ongoing thing as the Mississippi constantly brings sludge down river. It has to be dredged. I know a few people in that industry and they work year round.

Otherwise, we are still here around the Baton Rouge area! I can't get over how this storm is kicking FL, AL, MS, and Louisiana behinds. This is a very unusal storm and the eye is barely moving. If it keeps going NW, we will probably get the worst of it.

Lots of wind and rain, not high winds but enough to keep the emergency crews from doing their job. And as slow as it's moving, it's going to be a long week. New Orleans is getting pounded, we are 60 miles away and not getting near what they are getting at the present time.

The next few hours should tell the story,

Dennis

Dennis - Just looked at the radar. It looks like it's going to be a rough night for you. Thoughts and prayers go out to you and yours.

Well, it looks like the worst is over with for us. At least the winds will be gone sometime tommorow. The southside of the storm shouldn't be bad for us.

The biggest issue now is flooding and power outages.

Mississippi is going to have rain constant till sometime tommorow evening or Friday. The southwest lower area of Mississippi rainwater will drain straight down two rivers into Louisiana. Both rivers end up draining into Lake Pontrachain which is straight north of New Orleans. The wind is coming out of the south which is going to put resistance on both rivers. The last time something like this happened was around 1983. It wasn't good. It may be Friday before we know if we are going to have serious flood issues. This is mainly on the East side of the Mississippi River or East of Baton Rouge.

As far as power, I have been fortunite. Most around me have no power, and the count for Louisiana is somewhere around 500k without power. I'm not forgetting the people in FL, AL, and Mississippi as they are having the same problems, and in some cases worse than Louisiana!

Believe it or not, most of the power should be restored tomorrow except the outer areas of Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and areas below New Orleans will require more time due to flooding and trees down. The repair crews were here and ready before the storm ever hit land. Some started repairing the lines this evening.

Take care,
Dennis

We are now watching the flood waters. Most are getting their power back. As soon as the water goes down, it will probably almost be business as usuall.

Hey Dennis, Sean here in NOLA. We're doing ok. Lost some roof, and all fencing. But we made it through another one! No elec since Tues night.

Glad y'all are safe,
Take care bud,
Sean

Hey! Good thing I have a battery and an anywhere wireless card or it would have been really boring around here!

I live close to the Amite River east of Denham Springs, so you know what we are watching! The only good thing is myself and six of my neighbors NEVER lost power. Didn't have cable, nor did I have a landline working. Cabel is back, landline is lost! Many are still without power around here and I know Southeast Louisiana will wait on power, maybe several weeks. We should be up and running by Tuesday.

You know Interstate 10 was shut down going into New Orleans, so when they announced they could detour to Int 55 via Int 12, then pickup Int 10 again, well the traffic on Int 12 was bumper to bumper going to Int 55. Impatient truckers were holding up the emergency crews! Of course I know many were hauling supplies to the victims, so I guess it's ok. Sounds confusing, but for those that don't know, you take Int 10 through New Orleans, or you can bypass this route via Int 12. The truck that rolled on Int 10 over the Mississippi River westbound didn't help matters either. It blocked Int 10 westbound for a day!

Baton Rouge recieved a lot of rain causing massive flooding. It really saturated the ground and when the winds switched directions, the trees couldn't take it. Many fell, and in populated areas, it took the power line with them. Someone said either 40 or 60% of Louisiana lost power. I didn't have any damage, not even any trees down. But just a few miles from me it is a disater with the trees. Just below you the area took a beating.

So we are here just waiting on the water to fall. Doesn't look like there is going to much more rain, so we sould be OK.

Dennis

Damb hurricane Issac blew up lots of big storms here in so IL. We got 6 inches of rain last night. I woke up to a wet basement. I spent all day tearing out carpet and padding and shop vacing up water. Now I gotta re-finish my whole basement. Hopefully insurance helps out on the floor. Still gotta spend my own money to fix the root cause. Gotta have a basement company install a subfloor with a drainage system all the way around my whole basement that goes to my sump pump. SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! The only good thing it gives me a reason to spend $ on my house instead of toys. I should be greatful. People down in LA lost thier whole homes. I just got alittle water in my basement.

Hurricane and wind home deductables in the south are anywhere from 2% to 5% of your home value. Runs up quick, just depends how many claims you have on your home that determines your %.

Plus you are required to have flood insurance. The companies determine which type loss you have, flood or hurricane/wind damage.

A lot of people will take out second home loans just for their deductables.
