Another sign of the times —Trigger Locks

While in one of our local mart-mart, (Bi-Mart) stores this last weekend I stopped and looked at the some of the rifles on display. I'm not a wooden stock fan but there was a Savage Stevens 334, (6.5cm) sitting there with a nice looking walnut stock on it and I ask to see it.

The young man behind the counter said sure and started unlocking three different locks to get it out and then put a trigger lock on it before handing it to me. I asked him how you try the trigger with it locked up and he said you don't, this was the new company policy for all guns now. He wasn't happy having to do all the locks just to show it and I don't blame him.

It had a very smooth 60 degree bolt but if I couldn't try the trigger there was no way I would buy it, period. I have bought guns from this store for right at 40 years now but if I can't try the trigger I won't be buying any more from them, this is a shame because this is good store chain for our small area.

I guess it's just another sign of the times because of the crap going on over on the west side of the state of Oregon.

I just open a new box of bathroom trash bags this morning and printed in large bold type is a warning to keep away from children because of a suffocation risk. How much did it cost to print that warning which should be obvious to anyone even with a brain function of an alligator? No insult to alligators intended.

Lawyers run the world now, but it really isn't even their fault. Our society has adopted a policy of "no personal responsibility". Unfortunately, we just have to adapt to this brave new world and the extra cost of products we buy to protect people from being foolish. That's not to say that there aren't some valid product liability issues. But the overkill is costing all of us.

If you really like the rifle, and it's only a trigger validation effort, while not the optimum pre-buy situation, I might take the leap. A Savage trigger should be easy to adjust / replace if the factory one is trash.

Come on guys. Liberal/woke thinking, lawyers, and technology is turning out a world population of people who don't know much and can't do much. I can't believe some things I hear and see can be taken rationally, yet they are.

Example 1: Last night I ate supper with a friend. His wife handles manifests and work orders for an environmental waste company that does $7 million a month. She said they have young people working there that don't know how to write a check - they bring them to her.

Example 2: Another lady who works in a nursing home said they have some nursing graduates that can't read cursive writing the doctors use. They bring the documents to her.

So, to the original poster. You were very fortunate to have a clerk who understood locks and knows what a trigger is.

I was just trying to think -- I don't believe that I've ever scrapped a deal just because of a trigger issue. I guess it's just something that I figure I can fix. I've bought quite a few on line purchases that there was no opportunity to test trigger on.

What you're describing does suck though. jd

Wow….

Not surprised though.

I recently looked at a M700 Varmint Special in a pawn shop. (7mm08) No trigger lock, but the bolt release was jammed. Couldn’t get the bolt out to look at the bore. Figured someone was messing with the trigger, and a pin was in a bind. Kinda figured if I couldn’t inspect the bore, that I probably didn’t need it.

Since it was on consignment there was no negotiating power. Didn’t bother to mention that to the clerk, after all, as is means as is in the pawnshop business.

Many years ago a young couple was looking at a rifle as a late wedding present from his new wife. A window shopper had loaded a cartridge in the rifle and walked off. During the examination of the rifle one of the couple, (don't remember which) was shoot to death in the store in front of the other. The Florida Game and fish Commision sent officers around to check all guns on display and found 3 more loaded. I don't claim to know the answer, but I certainly understand the problem.

Our local store has around 200 rifles on display. All of them are locked. I, personally haven't seen a clerk hand over a rifle that wasn't locked, in years.

I know a guy that, after graduating high school in 1970, went to the Dodge dealership to buy a new car. He wanted a Charger, they had 2, one with a 440 and one with a 426 Hemi. They wouldn't let anyone test drive the Hemi, so he bought the 440.

Having owned three Hemi Cars in my life , I can understand the Dealers position . I wouldn't want some clown driving my Hemi , either .

My LGS has never had trigger locks on anything.
The 1911 on their hip and the 230 grain hollow points keep common since common.

We can blame the lawyers, liberals,, and dumb people. I see it as a societal problem, and I focus on education and the lack of it. For the past 40 years education has intentionally been dumbing down society. Teaching children what to think opposed to how to think for themselves. Now they teach whatever the Liberals in Government, tasked with overseeing education tell them to teach. The constitution states ( I amy not have it perfect) "The state shall not establish a religion" To me telling someone what to think is a religion.

I see videos of people being randomly interviewed in various internet outlets. They ask questions like: How many wheels on a 18 wheeler. How may stars on the US flag. Who fought in the Spanish-American war. What countries border the United States. Where is the Great Wall of China. And recently, what is the capital of the United States. These are few on many questions that are answered incorrectly.

Time for government, and government oversight to be completely removed from education. Maybe then, 30 years after I have passed this nation may stand a chance. But who am I kidding. China is slowly buying the USA, smart move on their part and businesses, politicians, and government officials line their bank accounts at the expense of a nation.

Idocracy is here. We need Not Sure to save us.

To be fair, trigger locks are the least of the problems going on in your state.
