Another Rem/age question:

Are the Criterion Remage barrels threaded for a standard Remington thread? what I want to know is if the receiver threads have been enlarged from truing, will the barrel be loose or will it still pull up tight and shoot consistent?

The criterions are standard rem thread 1-1/16''-16, and yes, enlarging the receiver threads will cause a sloppy fitting barrel. It is recommended not to touch the threads if planning on using any prefit barrel.

I don't know if my rem action is one that came out on a Monday or Friday, but if the action is out and not trued, can I really get good accuracy at all putting a barrel on myself? I haven't had the action worked yet, just trying to find a way to keep some money in my pocket and not in the gunsmiths

Accuracy does not come cheap . I think your question has way to many variables to answer intelligently .
What are your accuracy goals ? A better barrel will be an improvement over some factory barrels . They should foul less .

looking to build a walking varminter in 20vt. accuracy only needs to be minute of prairie dog, but if I build it myself, the smaller the groups, the prouder I will be

if walking varminter is your goal, I say go ahead put a barrel on your action as is and see how it does. You may be pleasantly surprised. If not up to your liking you can take the barrel off yourself and send your action to the smith for work. Just tell him not to touch the threads. I think a simple face square and bolt lapping will suffice for what you need. IMO

Pre-fit barrels are made to fit standard factory thread specs. Pre-fits are made on a production basis, the next one to be the same as the last. Over sized is a 'custom' condition, done one at a time to meet the specs of the receiver the barrel is being installed on. Using the nut, the barrel may "pull up tight",,,,,, but loose threads are NOT a safe condition or conductive to accuracy. Think of it this way,, every time a round is fired there's a high pressure "tug of war" happening. The bolt wants to push back and the barrel wants to move forward. I want a proper barrel to receiver thread fit. It's only common sense.

I ,too, was quite unsure of the outcome prior to ordering my criterion barrel. When screwing the new barrel to my action, the threads seem just a bit too loose. The results were good. I use that same gun today in 600yd matches and compete quite well. Go for it!

thanks to all for the replies and messages, looks like I will save the money on the action for now and see how well I can get it to shoot. All it takes is a wrench to find out. I'll improve the action only if I have to.
