Rem/age Receiver Threads

I'm building my 1st Rem/age with a new Rem 700SA. I left the action with a smith today for truing. He says he can "check" the receiver threads for straightness with a tap and a single point without going to an oversize thread.
I'm not a machinist, but can the single point be used without oversizing the threads?

TIA, Will

He hit right on he said CHECK . The last depend on how bad they are . Larry

Just have him true the action without re-cutting the threads. The fit should be loose enough to allow the nut to shoulder up freely.

Alex will chasing the threads with a tap remove material? I'm unable to believe that using the single point won't remove/resize the threads? Twice you've told me "the fit should be loose enough" when recutting the action threads can cause a "too loose" condition. How much tolerance are we talking about?

Chasing the threads with a standard tap won't remove enough to worry about. If your smith has a decent reputation stop second guessing him. It's a great way to drive a gunsmith insane.

Running a tap in will not remove much material if any. That would be fine. Single point will remove material of course. The difference between a tight fit and what I would consider a loose fit is .002-.003" on the pitch diameter.

Thanks for your help Alex. I had a local gunsmith true the action and leave the threads alone as it is on a NIB action.
Are you familiar with a Wally Heart bolt stop/release ? It's a pull or "presto" unlike the more common rocker type.
