Another new guy asking for advice

I live in Ashburn Virginia.
I shoot a 308 Remington 700P LTR TWS
I am 54 and have been actively shooting since I was 10.
My questions are:
Will the 700P work for F-class?
How does one get started in the sport i.e first match and such.

Are there any clubs in the northern VA area.

I appreciate all of the advise I can get

Doesn't that FTR have a 20" barrel?
If so it might be hard to get the 175's or 178's to stay about 1200 FPS at 1000 yards.
Look for some match at shorter ranges for a starter. There are a lot more ranges that shoot 600 yards then there are that have 1000 yard firing line.

Thanks for the information. Yes the LTR is a 20 inch barrel. I actual shoot the Federal match grade 168grain rounds. Do you think hat I can hot load for the 1000 yard line or should I just plan on not gong out past 600 until I can get a rifle better suited for the 1000yd line.

You can get to 1000yds with a 20" barrel, but not with 168s. You will need a fairly stiff load for 175s and will be at a disadvantage in windy conditions but there are guys that use LTRs to 1K.

The 168 grain sierra was designed to shoot in 300 meter competition, it works very well for a lot of other things but 1000 yards isn't one of them. the 175 is a lot better.

There is 1000 yard benchrest at Quantico every summer, you can learn a lot there and probably find out about F-class matches in the area.

Yes, you can shoot in F-TR class off bipod.

The best bullet choice may be the 155-grainers designed for Palma competition. The Lapua, Sierra, and Berger are all very good bullets, but they have different shapes and lengths so you'll probably need to try all three to see what your rifle likes.

Sorry, Paul - not in this instance. Barrel on an LTR is 20" long. Propelling a 155 grain bullet above 2850 FPS in a tube this short is going to mean some pretty extreme pressure loads. Getting a 175 above 2600 FPS, or a 190 above 2525 FPS is achievable, though the loads will be near-maximum.
