Another mass shooting. This time in Vegas.

Coincidentally, I was just at the range on Sunday and there were two 50 cal machine guns (tripod mounted), one 50 cal Barrett semi-automatic, and several full auto M16s being shot. I watched these guys for a while and honestly didn't see anything other than lots of money going up into thin air. The 50s missed everything between 700 and 1000, and the M16 guys just threw up a bunch of dirt in front of and around the 300 yard steel. Seemed pretty pointless to me. I'll take my 308 bolt gun and hit the 700 yard steel 90% of the time that I pull the trigger. I just don't get the appeal.
I always felt if you didn't hit the first shot how would the second get better .

Full auto machine guns to me are like loud car stereos, 1200 cc crotch rockets and exotic sports cars......"Look at me!"
Not knocking bench rest shooting
But I never could understand small group shooting if it wasn't in the x ring .
To me it is rewarding a shooter that didn't hit . lol Larry

As responsible gun enthusiasts, we must step up individually and as a group and support what is right, to maintain our rights. An automatic rifle, in any form, is simply a weapon of mass destruction. Anybody that thinks they need one is a threat to society and not a responsible gun owner like us. An argument for fully automatic weapons only threatens the good guys rights. That's us.
Class III or fully auto weapons are tightly regulated, and people who own them well vetted, so this is a reach. No crime with one has been recorded in many, many yrs.
So this argument is not valid, now attempts to get around this do threaten law abiding gun owners.

After reading all the posts and taking a little time to reflect on this horrific event I feel the need to put my .02 worth in.
1. My heart truly aches for those impacted by this cowardly act.
2. At the same time, by blood pressure really gets up with the politicians and newscasters that take advantage of this massacre. If it were them or some one they knew or loved, their attitude would be entirely different.
3. If this cowards actions were motivated by some ulterior motive or agenda ie. political, religious or otherwise get to the bottom of it and punish all of those concerned.
If on the other hand it was a random act, don't use your political agendas against those that obey the law.
We are as sorrowful as anyone for this horrible senseless act of violence, and pray that anyone connected with this be brought to justice.

I agree. I always refused to order bump fire stocks for customers, along with any other gizmo that crossed the 'almost like full-auto' line. It seemed to be asking for trouble all around. Here we have it.

I see folks questioning and rationalizing what they think other people need or don't need. For instance, "why would anyone need an automatic weapon, need to carry a pistol, need a 30 round magazine, etc....."

I don't have a need or desire for a full auto rifle. 23 years in the army gave the opportunity to shoot just about every weapon system short of the 8" self propelled howitzer or the Nike missile. Full auto was fun, particularly during fire for familiarization exercises where you're blowing off rounds that someone else is paying for.

But be careful.

Why does anyone need a pistol for self defense? The police are just a phone call away

Why does anyone need an assault rifle? Only the military should have those.

Why does anyone need a hunting rifle? Hunting is cruel and unnecessary. The super market is just around the corner.

Why does anyone need a high power rifle for "accurate shooting". What are those guys at accurateshooter.com up to? I'd feel safer if they took up gardening.

The 2nd amendment is a right and I see folks too willing to surrender their freedoms without a fight to opponents all too willing to take it.

What leaves me shaking my head is whenever something as tragic as this happens, and it was tragic, is the news media. All the reports from outside this mans home stating how many guns he had there, so what. He could legally own them. We, (all of us reading this), know that the "gun" just is a tool, it doesn't shoot its self.

What if the Vegas tragedy had been done with a car, would the news media be standing outside his house saying "Police on the scene are telling us that the suspect had 5 more cars and 200 gallons of gas in the garage". Doubtful.

The Politian's and news media will sensationalize this event and use it in such a way to further their need to take the guns away from the honest citizen.

As always, this is just my opinion.

I would NOT question that resolve on 99% of gun owners, myself, I would concede a few things to shut some people up for awhile. Gun owners a pushy lot themselves, the bumpfire one of them, pushing NFA laws another, be careful what you wish for, HPA is a joke from day 1.

I regret that I have but one 'like' to give to this. As Ben Franklin said many years ago:

"We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately."

To that extent, in our resourced constrained environment:

1. Why does anyone need a 5,000 sq ft house?

2. Why does anyone need a 300 HP vehicle?

3. Why does anyone need fast food?

4. Why does anyone need electronics?

5. Why does anyone need...you get the idea.

That’s usually what I reply with when someone asks me why “i need” something. Or with the less popular response of bc whoever is going to come after me sure as hell won’t be coming after me with a musket.

And after you: "...shut some people up for awhile..." and then they come back, what do you do then...decide that something else should be conceded? ...preferably something that effects someone besides you...for the time being..?

Exactly. Don't think this is a slippery slope? You can't buy a 32 oz soft drink in NYC because the mayor decided no one needs that much sugar.

This whole situation just sickens me. The other part of me says more gun laws when murder is already illegal. They politicize everything dealing with firarms to the point where you know some feel good legislation is around the corner. He was a mad man who blatently had serious psych issues. The news says no and right away they want to blame some valium but never the crazed maniac, it is always something eles fault. If someone wants to murder they will always find a way to do it no matter what. In china some nut job walked into a school and stabbed many people with no resistence to stop him so the argument that we need more laws will do nothing, it wont fix stupid. I have prayed for all affected by this sensless crime. Bump stocks are the target and next it will be what they attach to.

Is that yout answer to my question?
I don't feel as though I need to answer you, but, bumpfire was atf approved, they can take it away w/o legislation, same as the brace for an AR pistol. if some shit goes bye-bye, doesn't mean fienstien, pelozi, schummer or the like had any say in the matter. So quit playing the gloom and doom card with me.

If they do make bump fire stocks illegal it will be an interesting precedent to note whether they buy them from you or make you take the loss.

I think the most effective thing we can do is to start a campaign to make cars illegal because DUI kills so many people. We could make it legal to have a chauffeur driven car (analogous to a celebrity body guard) because chauffeurs don't get drunk and drive. --Jerry
