Another "how to" stock repair thread.

View attachment 1119265

Heres a filled in buttplate i did many years ago on a kelbly br stock. Only downfall is i cant remove the buttplate to save a few ounces on a bad scale at a match
That glossy black looks like someone knew what they were doing.

This stock is definitely heavy in the butt.
It's for Chad's 22lr.
From what I started with this morning to now...
It's a different stock.
I'm gonna get it primed up tomorrow with the interior of this bus.
I'm thinking about startin with a nice rich blue metallic, laying out some pins to create panels, airbrush some water drops in the panels with some candy fade. Possibly some white racing stripes coming out of the barrel channel at an angle.
This one will be next level!!!

As someone who does about $10-12K worth of shipping a week, here's how you abate the issues of damage in shipping. Request all stocks be shipped in minimum a soft side rifle case (A cheap rimfire case fits a F/stock or AR upper well) or even just a cheap hard side case. Next is to stuff the box with as much packaging material as possible to keep it from rattling around inside the box. Bracing the box from being crushed with styrofoam/beadboard is a good option, too. UPS has an excellent record on paying claims, if you want tips on what their criteria is for acceptable packaging, let me know, I can give you their minimum requirements.

I've dealt with smiths who charge a deposite for a hard side shipping case if you do not ship to them in one, find a cheap supplier for <$20 and charge $25 for customer not shipping to you in one, in addition to actual shipping.

I'm going to request folks to go to Amazon and buy a cheap $20 hard case to ship me thier stock in.
What ever shipping costs are to get it to me will be added to my small fee for refinishing.

Fast14 I have forgot about you I'll be getting you so.e colors together.

No worries, get me some measurements and I will get some products together for you as well. Also, anything you need for finishing stocks, let me know. Related topic, I'm shipping my stock off this next week to have some mill work done that just easier than doing it by hand.

Also, know that anything shipped in something other than a "cardboard box" by UPS can nullify any claim on damage during transit. Same goes with anything requiring an extra handling fee, commonly called an "oversize fee" or "dim-oversize fee", typically applied to any package over 48" in length. I can give you some key words and figures to give UPS to nearly guarantee your claim goes through, if you need, they dont like to make their requirements easy to find...

Also, expedited shipping generally always gets better handling, as well. Cost up front vs cost/time to do it again.

I got on amazon and had a hard case drop shipped directly shipped to bcz. The 19 dollars shipped case will actually save me shipping money. I over packaged the shit out of it sometimes i need to think smarter.

You can buy a cheap gun case at walmart. Tell them to go in the back and get one still in the cardboard box. Turn it inside out and ship it

This really cracks me up honestly...... take this for what it’s worth..... you keep saying “cheap” and that’s what your getting.
In fact some of these “cheap” cases have plastic tabs that stick down under the 1” of “cheap” foam they use...... now you say just stick that in there and stick it in the box this “cheap” case came in and ship it.
Its got no padding around the case to the box and when someone puts some weight on top of this during shipping those plastic tabs are going to go right thru that 1” foam padding and into your finished stock you just waited for...... good luck...... I’ve been known to ship a stock or two.... knock on wood!

I shipped one of my stocks down to Ggmac in Fla. It arrived in perfect shape because I made a box for it out of 1x6 and 3/8” plywood. Just sayin!!;);););)

I guess ive been lucky shipping a stock or 2 as well. I get the plano cases- they do not have the tabs youre talking about- i have seen those before. If im shipping just a stock i usually use the double box mcmillan boxes

Come on bro, the last box I got from you looked rode hard and put away wet, like a girl I use to know.
I prayed over that package for a half hour before mailing.
I prayed for that girl I knew also!

Beautiful work on the stocks !
Be sure to pad the inside of the case if there's anywhere it may need it, especially at the ends. I ship with a Plano or better inside a cardboard box but I use the double thick heavy cardboard, not the cheap thin stuff. or a box in a box. I always take a couple gun boxes when I pick something up at my FFL, he's got a ton and just throws them away. I take some of those tubes they ship building plans in from work to ship barrels.

Let just say they were both pink on the inside.
This customer just got upgraded to my case for my POF15.
I didn't like the planoit would probably be fine for a sporter but cant handle the 3" fore end.

When i ship stocks that need a paint job ill throw anything together. Not concerned with shipping damage as much as on a complete rifle. Can you imagine the bricks that would be shat if i shipped a complete rifle in a wooden crate with a ziegel case inside charged to the customer? Thats the best way to ship
