Another dumb scope question

Even after reading the article on home page, i am kind of still not sure which way to go, i am leaning towards fixed power, either Sightron 36, or the Weaver T36.

i hope i am not bothering the forum. I am almost done a build of a .260 rem Elesio RTS-Target. I have my iron sights (still recovering from that pain), bought em last year at Perry. i don't need alot of scope. I plan on shooting XTC and prone. I think i will spend most (85%) of my time on Irons because i am trying to learn the Palma game. but i would like to buy a decent scope, and quick disconnect rings. Can you guys recommend a scope without alot of reticle "stuff" in it, that tracks well (1/4's would be fine), can take some abuse not from recoil ;D , fixed power ok, not for hunting, and is reliable. Used is fine. The big hang up is that the price has to be friendly with the Navy enlisted guy's check book. I am still a sling shooter, and am not yet interested in BR shooting yet. Gary Elesio uses a fixed power weaver and QD rings himself. Any recommendations are welcome. I just don't think it is time for a Nightforce, Mark4, SIII or above. Maybe as a retirement present. Some of the guys that I shoot with have the scopes that you are asking about.They seem to be happy with them.They have decent glass,track well,and seem to hold point of aim.You can shop a little and find them for $400.00 or less,new.Good luck with your choice,and thanks for your service. Sean: The Leupold 6.5-20x40mm w/ tgt. knobs is one of my favorite "mid-range" rifle scopes, and the unlimited factory warranty, no matter who the owner is, makes the possibility of buying a good used one even a better deal. They can be bought used in the $400/$450 price range. A really excellent scope.

Sean: The nice thing about having a scope setup for your rifle, even though you plan on using mostly iron sights, is the ability to test your ammo including reloads for accuracy, amount of drop at the various distances, etc., without the errors that would/could happen with iron sights. One of my Flatop AR's has a dedicated Leupold 4-12x mounted and it only takes a few minutes to swap between the scope & the carry handle iron sights. Downrange ballistics do not change between the optics and the iron, so you can learn a lot of valuable information, that would take longer (and more ammo) if using iron sights only. I still prefer the variable power scopes: easier to find your target downrange at a lower power setting, then crank it up, and if you have a mirage condition you have the ability of dialing out at least part of it. And if you want a "fixed power" just crank it up & leave it there.

I really had not thought about the scope from the reloading standpoint. i do see your point though. That $400-450 range was right about where i was thinking then i guess another $100 for the QD rings? i have dome friends that are using US Optics, NF, etc. They are nice scopes but too rich for my check book. the only scope i have ever shot was a Leupold Mark IV on the Navy's .300winmag i am assigned to at the matches. that is the nicest part of the gun. Still a bit out of financial reach for me though. That 4-12 or 6.5-20 Leupold sounds like the ticket. i am gonna keep picking up brass and tin cans to save my $$. Thank you again for the input.

sean: That 4-12x Leupold would be minimal for what you want to do, I assume longer distance accuracy, so a variable in the 6.5-20x magnification range, or slightly more) may better suit your needs. I don't use quick detachable rings: just do not have a need for them, but use nothing but the Burris Signature Zee rings, and it takes a few minutes to remove the 2 cross-bolts, going thru the Weaver base, to slide off and remove the scope with the rings attached. Later, slide it back on & there will not be any sight change or sight-in required. With the Signature's you also have the advantage of no ring marks on the scope tube, and the ability to use the off-set inserts, that really come in handy if needing to "tilt" the scope for more up clicks or to keep the windage & elevation adjustments close to center. A lot of choices out there to meet your needs.
