Another caliber choice question

My shooting interests, for now, have moved away from 600/1000 BR to shooting steel. From my hunting shack I have steel set out from 300 yards to a mile. I already shoot a 6-47L (105-108), a 300 WBY (215 and 230), and a 338 EDGE (300). I am looking to fill the gap between the 6 and 300. I am not looking for a bbl burner...I am looking for good brass quality/accuracy. The bbl will go on my Dasher Light gun.... BAT "M" 1.47 Multiflat duel port single shot restocked with ????.

I am trying to choose a caliber. My thoughts are a "dasherized" 6.5-47L with the 140 Hybrid or a straight 284 WIN and the 180/195's. I was going to go with a 7-300 WBY tube now that the 195's are out, but that is baisicly the same as the 300 WBY with a little less recoil. This will be more of my mid range (600 - 1200 yards) gun.

Thanks for your imput,
Tod

^^^^The .280A.I. is an excellent round. Should fill in the gap nicely.. BUT if you are into tinkering, you might want to try a .260A.I. using the Lapua Palma brass. You can drive the 140 Hybrids in the mid-2900's which is nearly identical to the 6.5 x 284 with a bit more barrel life..

Why don't you just shoot the Dasher?

I already shoot the 6-47L...the Dasher is not "between" the 6 Lapua and the 300 WBY. Besides, The two Dasher comp tubes are still VERY compeditive in 1k...going to save them...just in case. ;)

Could a guy get into the 2900's with the new 195 and a 280AI"with a 30 inch tube?

It may very well be possible with either Retumbo or RL-33, although I can not attest to that.. But I would think so.. BUT I know it would with a 7mmWSM...

Well, your quest for a new cartridge may have just ended! Get after it son!!

Spent the night thinking about this. Question....How much difference is there between the 284 and the 280 AI...Specifically with heavy bullets? I know good 6.5-284 brass is just a click away with no FF process.

Just hit a snag in the plan. Ejection port is 2.2". Can't use a 280 length case. Looks like the longest case that I can use would be the 243/260/308 length case @ 2.00. MAYBE a 284 at 2.17...maybe. I am NOT going to change the port length....I know that it is as simple as sending it into BAT, but that is a non starter.

Now I m back to the "Dasherized 6.5-47L or maybe a 260 of some sort. 7mm08 just does not have the boiler room for the 180/195 pills.

:'( ???

Think about the .260A.I. using Lapua Palma brass.. The Palma brass (small rifle primer) which is considerably stronger than large rifle primer pockets, will withstand higher pressures and will allow you to drive 140 class bullets over 2900 f.p.s. That should fill the bill..

Case length for a 284 is 2.17" but the OAL gets long with VLD's.

Case length for 7mm Win Short Mag is 2.10" and could be necked down to 6.5mm but the selection of 7mm VLD bullets is much better than it used to be. You would need to have a Magnum faced, 0.535" bolt.

I don't care about loaded OAL...I am worried about ejecting the empties. Also, I don't have a mag bolt face, so WSM = no go.
