Annealing question #4,307

Where in the process of reloading should you anneal?

Deprime, anneal, resize, trim ??? this is the question I mean.

Thanks, mj52

I tumble my brass first, then following the identical process you list. But I also champfer and deburr to finish off each piece before I start the actual reloading process.

I take a different approach to annealing than most do. Most anneal first and prep their brass after that... Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.. I like to do all the prep work FIRST, then anneal BUT since heat has a way of "moving metal around" the last step I take is to run them into a mandrel to "straighten out" anything that may have changed during the annealing process... Then I brush out the necks, prime and load.. I prefer as little of brass working as possible after annealing...

JCS,

That makes sense. Get case to it's physical minimum, treat with heat and then go through your standard reloading steps.

I see nothing wrong with your approach. Mine is slightly different because I probably use different tools.

Shoot, anneal, and resize. I do not clean my brass except to remove FL sizing lube. If I neck only (no lube) I don't even clean at all.

So there ya go. Question 4,307 and only 4,285 different ways to do it.

Not really. I believe there are those that do it correct and those that do it wrong.

The reason to anneal is to make brass pliable for sizing and minimize spring back variances.

Think about it. If you never sized the brass you would never have to anneal.

So, I clean, anneal, F/L size, trim, and reload.

I anneal, resize, tumble off the resizing lubricant, deprime(tumble with old primer in to avoid tumble media in flash hole), trim/debur, clean primer pocket, re-prime, add powder/bullet-DONE.

I do things slightly different because I use each process to reduce the efforts of the following and speed up the process. Since I anneal every time I load I am not as concerned about getting the perfect annealing every time. Here is my process. Deprime on a separate depriming press to keep the crap away from my good presses, resize the cases using lots of lube, trim to length on a Girard trimmer because it seems to work a little better with a bit of lube in the bushings I find, then clean using stainless pins. Now the cases are wet so I let then dry for a while depending on the time of year. My last step before loading is annealing to make sure there is no water left in the cases. My runnouts are good and haven't changed since I started annealing.

Just my process.

Well my feet are wet I just annealed my first 100 cases.

As usual doing anything for the first time, took me longer to set up then to anneal.

3/8" long socket with a couple of 3/8" nuts in bottom to lift 223 case well out of the socket. I just took a long sheetrock screw and fed it through the nuts and out the bottom of the socket to use as a spindle. Next time I go out I'll buy the correct bolt and make it up proper.

Cordless drill on low and a tin of water to quench.

a couple of those universal 50 pc trays and Ma's hair dryer. The firemen were impressed with my ingenuity.

Lee decapper. Sinclair primer pocket uniformer. Flashhole if necessary. Anneal. SSM. Size. CTS trimmer. SSM. Dry with dehydrator.

i always tumble first . then scrub necks with cal. brush and graphite. i like to baby my dies. i only uniform primer pockets the 1st time then dont even clean again. i like my k n m pocket tool flash hole tool and v l d inside chamfer. anyway anneal cleaned unsized then continue. MHO regards stretch.
