and so it begins...6.5 gt

so i picked up the chambered bbl today,,YESSSSSSSSSSS
BUT the intended stock is much rougher than i had hoped for so this will go back into the original dasher stock for now. i have both short range and a 600 match coming up, so not sure when any load work will get done...small steps but still going forward.

so turning necks( alpha necks suck) will make a dummy case and get a chamber zero with hornady 140 atips. then load a 20 step ladder in .2 steps to get some base line data. thinking h or i 4895 to start. waiting on scope rings. still no real dies

still pondering.
i modified a 6.5x47 and i can neck size for a while
i did the same to the seater and can seat...but
still need to talk to people when i have some fired cases in hand.
wilson was open to the seater and maybe a fl bushing die
would love a micron..they make a 6 gt

i also have an rcbs 6gt die set that i will look into modifying.
bullet central said no to modifying their 6gt micron die
wilson does not list a fl die for 6gt, a seater from them should be a no brainer.

SO i bought a 6.5x47 rcbs super seating die and took the guts out and put them in my 6gt seating die and presto,,a ,6.5 gt seating die
bad news is h4895 under performed. i used ql to predict max and was off by a couple hundred fps. this is the second time ql has done this so i guess i need a cheat sheet for h4895. clean anneal neck size this lot and try again,,,,2600 aint 2800. next is sat.

My gut says H4895 may be a little fast and Varget-speed will be better. I'd still try H4895 regardless of what QL says.

Looking forward to your updates!

so i have fired brass, and was going to neck size in my modified 6.5x47 die,
BUT i bought a .295 chucking reamer so i could clearance the top of a 6 gt sizing die below where the bushing sets. was not sure how tuff/hard the rcbs sizing die was but i jumped in with both feet, turned the lathe up past 1000 rpm, turned on the oil spout, and chucked up the reamer. bingo just like magic, right thru and nice and clean, i now have a 6.5 gt fl /bushing die that works well.
waiting on a pilot to try annealing...later

Lucky or the die wasn't that hard.
I punched through a small base die that was sizing too small (0.243") and it took a carbide reamer. 0.2505" for 22 Nosler (.223 size neck). I then run it into a collet neck sizer.

well this cartridge is confusing me. first i am shooting amax140 not the a tips.i have a tips but will try when i know more. i4895 was much slower than i wanted and lower than QL predicted. so i switched to rl15.5, at what was listed as just over full case and right on max pressure i was just under 2700 fps,,,,but no pressure signs and still slower than predicted. so i will load up some more and see where the gun says it has had enough.

How long is your barrel? 30?

I would think after speed up and with a firing on the cases you’ll have 2750-2775? What’s the expectation?

yes the bbl is 30"
i was hoping for 2800..but it is a wildcat with little known history.
my latest calculations say i can stuff 37 and get close to 2800...we will see what the rifle has to say about that.

Even with a 30” tube, 2800 seems a bit of a lofty ambition from the GT case. A guy at my club has been shooting 6GT very successfully in PRS for a couple years, with Alpha brass too. He runs a 30” and 3000fps with a 105gr Berger. The extra 33% more bullet weight, and increased bore volume should rob you of quite a bit of speed. 2700-2750 should be getting frisky with most of the favorable powders. That said there are a few local gents running their other 6.5 cartridges in that range on windy days vs the 6mm variants. One guy in particular runs ~2675 and is very successful with it.

Keep us updated. Enjoying the progress.

Any updates on this project? My 22BR took way more RL15.5 than I expected. It was closer to H4350 than it was to Varget. Very mellow pressure curve too that didn’t give any surprises as it approached max.
