Ammo Prices and Gouging

I believe they were sued earlier this year for price gouging.

At first I didn't understand how there could be regulation against 'price gouging'. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. But then I went a little deeper and found out (in Texas) that the regulation is for 'essentials' and additionally to help protect the elderly.

But ammo isn't 'essential'. (well, maybe in Texas...ha ha) So I don't see where price gouging regs apply. I copied this from the Texas Attorney General's website:

  1. Selling or leasing fuel, food, medicine, lodging, building materials, construction tools, or another necessity at an exorbitant or excessive price;

    or
  2. Demanding an exorbitant or excessive price in connection with the sale or lease of fuel, food, medicine, lodging, building materials, construction tools, or another necessity.

Like @Ohio Varmint Shooter said. It’s not price gouging on non essential items.

We were taught about supply and demand in grade school. If the price is too high don’t buy it. If nobody buys then the price will go down.

I can’t get mad at a business for their high prices, but I’m free to not purchase their goods.

Somebody sued CTD for price gouging, I think I've heard that during every shortage. When a suit is successful I'll pay attention

When you sell your house, or your car, do you sell it for what it used to be worth, or do you sell it for what you can get, right now?

CTD did the same thing a few years back when the 22 rimfire ammo was hard to get, I swore off them back then......Gunbroker also allowed gouging to go unchecked as well, an example, CCI -SV was being sold back then for over a 100.00 a brick, all by the same seller who sold over 12 cases at that price, and thats all he ever sold the CCI ammo, what does that tell you ? needless to say i dont use them anymore either.

Right. I don't get 'gouging'. We're a free market economy.
That said, as a seller, it's their decision whether peoples' reaction to their pricing strategy is worth it.

Starlings eat plentiful, crap in it, then go to the next pile. Human beings are better. Dont feed starlings.
Or as dad always said, "Take their half out of the middle".

It is a Free market - the seller has the right to ask any price he wants and you have the right to not purchase at that price.

Everytime I see a post like this I am amazed that folks want some entity unbroker, or some sort of Gov control on prices - really??
Think about what you are asking for - would you be happy if you posted something for sale and they would not let you post it because they thought your asking price was too high. Who determines what gouging is on an item? Do you want Gunbroker or the Gov to set up a committee to set prices on everything which is what would have to be done since gouging takes place on all sorts of items.

My feeling is that if I have it for sale I can ask any price I want - the interested party has the right to purchase or not purchase. - A pretty simple system.

Well Mr drover, your entitled to you opinion just like I am, if you think its ok for a gouger to sell ammo that at the time was 28.00 a brick for 100.00 plus shipping then thats fine, I however think its wrong, sort of like gouging prices on generators after a hurricane, or gas after a hurricane, or food....etc.....That seller sold 12k worth of ammo that he maybe had 3500.00 in, oh and I am sure he reported that income to the IRS as well.

After all the money I've spent on this hobby, I've seriously considered selling my excess primers that I'm not using for 5 times what I paid. Don't get me wrong, I just sold an 8lb jug of Varget to a needy shooter for what I paid. Seems to me the guy that's paying 5x the cost of primers on the web, for the most part, doesn't really need them.

What would you propose for a solution so that it can't be done?? The only reasonable option I can see is don't buy it.

I had mentioned it in another thread but i received an email from an online retailer for ammo and they notified me to let me know they had a case (1000) of S&B in stock. Before everything the price was $329.99 and the price that day was $799.79.
And you were sure to thank them for letting you know it was available right LOL

My thoughts are this-
If you didn’t buy it when it was $28/brick, why whine when it’s $100/brick. It is a consumers world until it isn’t. Next time you see it for said normal price, do what those of us that have it did already, buy it. Do I like the fact that it is so short of supply that people can inflate the price and still get such an asking price? Hell no, but you can bet the bank on the fact that I already have what I need to last me and my 6 year old son until we are both long gone. Is that hoarding or planning ahead?

P.S.- Maybe we could start a Deal’s thread and share info on where we find good deals?

I know this is an older thread..but when the ammo shortage started..aka obomba time..I seen 550 bulk packs of rem,the kind with a click every magazine..for 150.00 ...that is gouging....I have some 900b for my Kimber..not for sale or trade...and in trying some of the standard etc ..I haven't found anything to shoot w the old federal...in the USA Vista would be a Monopoly if win closed...and federal has gone downhill in quality...for the money I'm buying fiocchi std vel when I can find it...but I don't compete anymore.

There was a time bread was five cents a loaf. We all have to just get used to it.
Trusellos Bakery, 5 fresh baked loaves of Italian bread $1.00 8" square slice of Pizza $.10

I am no longer loyal to any supplier / LGS, the best deal gets my money. I have a difficult time palleting companies that in MY opinion have taken advantage of the situation too long.
