ammo for cz455

I built a trainer for my son on a CZ455. Wondering if someone can recommend a good ammo for this rifle. I'm guessing the best thing is to try a range and see what it likes, but I'm looking to see if there's a "start with this one" recommendation. Mostly practicing on a reduced F-Class target in the backyard at up to 50-yards.

I don't do the rimfire F-Class thing....yet. Smallbore silhouette has been my game. My philosophy has been to practice with what you compete with to keep the learning curve down. I compete with SK Standard Plus or Rifle Match, but I have found that recent CCI-SV lots have a very similar trajectory as my SK. As a result I've started my second case of CCI-SV in a year.

22LR ammo changes so much from lot to lot that it would be a crap shoot to buy a little of this and a little of that for testing. That was always the thing that frustrated me about the BR50/50 stuff.
I saw results of some testing at the range yesterday that got my attention. It was a 455 with factory heavy barrel that had been put into a Manners stock. The guy had a torque wrench at his bench and was changing torque in the action bolts. When he put 30 inch-pounds in the rear and 35 up front it went from 3" for 10 shots and 100 yards to about 1 1/2".

for now, I just want to get him on the target and let him have some fun and develop some skill in shooting for score, maybe attach some awards for performance or something to motivate him. The goal is to work him up to .223 and FTR relatively quickly. We'll probably start out pretty short and work our way up to 50 yards. I put a can on it to keep the (relatively distant) neighbors happy.

Hard to beat CCI SV for price and acceptable accuracy. Next step up might be Wolf MT or the SK. Good to see more youngsters enjoying the sport.

Jay,

I like CCI SV, Eley Target, Club on the low end price. Wolf MT and ME for the mid price. Lapua Center X for the higher end.

mine shot the cheap thunderbolts like crazy good going to try center x when weather warms up

Eley Match and Lapua Center-X have been the two most consistent for mine. Wolf MT isn't bad, and is a little less expensive. At the other end of the spectrum, there are also a number of people (includng myself) that have gotten surprisingly good results from the 40 gr Winchester Super X Power-Point HP rounds (1280 fps).

10-12 years ago I stumbled across some WW-PP at a big-box store near the silhouette range I frequented at the time. I purchased a carton (dumped loose in a paper box of around 500) for practice and hunting. Holy cow!! These things would shoot. By the time I got back to the store to buy up all the common lot numbers they were down to two cartons. I bought those and haven't found any that good since.

Lapua Center X is what I try to keep when I really want to see how a gun shoots, but man it is pricey. CCI SV does good for the price. Wolf and SK are better than CCI, but not as good as Lapua IMO. I did a lot of testing a few years ago with some CZ 452's. I hope the pricing and availability continues to get better on rimfire ammo.

Rws rifle target. So far in mine out of about 10 different decent brands. Many more to try and it really makes a difference. Also decent was eley practice. 10 shots at about an 1" @ 100yds.
