Center fire or rim fire doesn't matter,I have never had a bad day on a prairie dog town no matter how much ammo was used

Isn't that the truth. Some guys get way too hung up on how many rounds they shoot.

Heh, you gotta get on the net and brag about how many hundreds or thousands of rounds. Having shot pdogs for 45+ yrs I was always thankfull to have SOME to shoot, not be greedy and hope I could kill them all so the next guy didn't have any! Never shot more than 450 rds of centerfire or when we were kids more than a brick of 22's in a day in 45 yrs. Usually 200-250rds was more than enough! Never felt it necessary to see how much I could shoot and didn't find it necessary to brag about such. Sure wished the good ole days of the 60's-70's and 80's weren't gone, when there were no selfish out of staters and no internet for them to brag on!!!! Oh yea, change is good! I keep forgetting it is all about me and numbers!

I will be recording every shot as a hit or miss and tally up my hit % with each weapon/ammo. In all reality, if I only use 350-400 rounds each day, as long as my hit % is respectable, then I'll be a happy shooter. ;D

Screw the pen and paper….you should be focused on the following: load, aim, pull the trigger, watch em blow, then repeat….nothing else matters. You are likely traveling hours to shoot these critters, not to take time out of your day to figure out your hit percentage. Just my two cents...

I can go out in the woods with three bullets (22lr) for several hours during squirrel season...and consider it a good day!

250 rounds is a good day for me - 350 rounds is verging on too much, it is not all about the numbers it is about the time afield, either by oneself or with good friends.
As far as keeping track of hits/misses - a down cartridge in the cartridge box is a hit, an up cartridge is a miss, no point in making things too difficult.

Actually according to the ranchers ive hunted on, they do want them all removed. If they catch wind ur trying to drag ur feet and "leave some for seed" they will not be allowing u on their property anymore, and often times goes the same if their ranching friends catch wind of it

That's humorous. Never in all my years was I ever not allowed back to any town because 'I never shot enough'! If I shot 25 it was 25 less than they had!

Be darned if a landowner is gonna dictate how much I spend on ammo or how much I abused a barrel. It is about enjoying oneself and still having respect for nature and yea, that includes prairie dogs, coyotes and everything! A life is a life and a cripple is still inexcuseable. Laugh if maiming doesn't bother you. I in my older years tend to look at things a lot different than when I was a teen or in my 20's. If you don't want to die being gut shot or bleed out from a missing limb then perhaps maybe it isn't right for other living things. Only us humans think our life is more valuable than anything else!

Only reason I have been declined to shoot pdogs is because they had some out of staters coming that bring them $100 worth of cheap deer sausage they feed to their dog/cats and a fifth of $15 whiskey/bourbon. It is an ego thing for some to say "I got hunters comin"! Oh, and I grew up on a farm/ranch that is still owned by my 87yr old mother(dad passed last yr @90) and there is a small dog town on it. So I know a bit about ranch personalities in these parts.lol Also know why 99% of dog towns on private land have been poisoned by landowners. Because of garbage, thousands of rounds of SPENT BRASS and ricochets from those thousands of bullets killing cattle, cutting fences, killing anything else that moves in a dog town etc. Also youth around here can't hunt/shoot anymore because those thousands of rounds leave nothing reasonably close left. But again heh, it's all about me, I deserve all I can get!

Now you guys can humor yourselves with my stupid, uneducated comments. lol As you may notice, a pretty sore subject for those who grow up in an area where 100+ come every year and some camp on a town and claim everything as theirs because they bought a license.

I guess those sit down dinners (by invite) and a few Thanksgiving ones to boot (during deer) means the ranches we shoot at really don't care for our group too much then. Not ALL PD shooters are nitwits and some will help with chores if we can. I understand your position though.

You missed his point fully. I have seen my Grandfathers friend not invited back for not shooting at a coyote.

Boy... The ammo question was left in the dust...Ironwoorker you most likely will have plenty of ammo for 2 days in the field...good luck but most of all have fun and be safe....I have never not been allowed back to a Farmer/Ranchers dog towns, I guess if someone does something stupid this can happen ....I have had them ask me and my fellow shooters to not shoot the coyotes and badgers because they eat the PD s ...I have lost more dog towns to the poison than anything... a lot of land owners will poison a town ( late fall to early spring) after the shooters have taken there share, there are less to poison...has happened to me many times thru the years...makes me unhappy to loose a section and a half of dogs!!! Oh, I don't think I did. His point was if you don't shoot a couple thousand rds you will get booted! Mine was I never ever seen that happen or even mentioned in these parts. Guess if you don't agree with me then try and suggest I am incompetent or haven't a clue! Whatever, not many turnip trucks in these parts to fall off of, well, not many carrying local pdog shooters!

Have a good day all! I don't get greedy, brag, nor argue on the net! I'm done here.

Respectfully,

Shooting three rounds or a thousand does not matter as long as you are not leaving breading stock for your next trip. What you can't shoot you can't shoot. Here in ND it will happen.

Running out in the middle of a good shoot is one of the most awful feelings you can have.On my first ever prairie dog shoot I took the whopping amount of 185 rounds for my 22-250, good thing the gun shop in Clayton New Mexico was well stocked!

350 rounds in one day is plenty. I say this due to:

1) Your eyes can only take so much eye fatigue from glassing (this is with premium optics)
2) Fatigue from recoil (even if shooting a .223 with no recoil), muzzle blast is included in this
3) From my experience, when the shooting gets going, the dogs get smarter. They then hits the holes and peek out causing you to slow your role.

Lastly, anyone that says their hit rate is a high percentage of shots and are able to eradicate a town is blowing smoke. When you take into account distance, wind and being a small target at various ranges, your hit rates are cut way down. Once you have ammo covered, focused on what's need to make the day more enjoyable...Sunscreen, shade, bug spray, lunch and water will go a long way to making a trip more enjoyable.
