Ammo for 2 days og PD shooting

1st Prairie Dog shoot. I'll be bringing 4 rifles RRA AR-15 700 rounds 22/250 500 rounds and a 6x284 150 rounds last but not least 22 Magnum 350 rounds. Will this be enough for Eastern MT this early June ?

Target availability is the key question.....

Pups will be up & running........they don't stay still very long....

Have fun......

It is a good start. Once you get out there and start shooting then you will know if your quantities are right.

A good friend of mine has pd hunted in several states for years. He told me he takes 3500 rounds for his 22-250s no matter where he goes. He also takes along 1500 rounds of 218 Bee. His thinking is, you can always bring unused ammo back home. And like he said, by the time you pay the gas and meals and lodging, ur money ahead to take extra ammo even if u dont need it. He said nothing bothers him more than to run out of ammo and have to put a stop to the fun. He takes 4 22-250s and 2 218 Bees. Plan for the best trip ever, Hope for the best trip ever. Good luck.

Better to have a few hundred rounds left over than to run out. The best shooting I've been into called for 600+ per day. Last Sunday, I shot 510 rounds of .223 and ran out before the end of the day - and I was picking my shots. If shooting your A/R at everything you see no matter how far - you could do double that, critters cooperating.

That will be plenty! 600-700 rounds a day is a lot of shooting! Your head will hurt after all that…

Why would your head hurt?

Because it is a lot of shooting! Sun, wind and 1,200 loud bangs....plus your buddies shooting next to you. At the end of the day you will be hearing gun shots in your sleep.... But don't worry, it is worth the pain! 8)

Divide out time per shot for all of that and you can see how often each shot can take per the allotted shooting time. It also depends on your style of shooting.

I have a 2-day PD shooting trip coming up the first of June as well. I'm bringing 450 rounds for my 20 Practical, 300 rounds of factory Fiocchi ammo and 100 self loaded ammo to shoot/fireform in my .223AI and another 100 rounds that I loaded that has already been fireformed, and 200 rounds for my 17WSM so I'll have 1150 rounds at my disposal if needed. I'm hoping that's plenty. :)

The cheapest, easiest precaution is to just throw in extra rimfire to supplement the closer shots if things start looking tight.

+ 1 on the rimfire. We always have a couple 17 HMR's and 2 or 3 bricks of ammo in the truck. Some days they get shot as much as the centerfires!!Still lots of fun......Enjoy your trip

Center fire or rim fire doesn't matter,I have never had a bad day on a prairie dog town no matter how much ammo was used

Isn't that the truth. Some guys get way too hung up on how many rounds they shoot.

I will be recording every shot as a hit or miss and tally up my hit % with each weapon/ammo. In all reality, if I only use 350-400 rounds each day, as long as my hit % is respectable, then I'll be a happy shooter. ;D
