Amazing 10 shot group

Late this evening I setup the Turbo rimfire with the added mid barrel tuner on it and began testing by torquing the Pappas mid barrel tuner and shooting two shots. If I had a good looking two shot group I'd keep going and usually by the 3rd or fourth shot I'd have a flyer. So I kept tightening the tuner and kept repeating the two shots and again repeat with more if I thought I had a promising group going. After going thru nearly two boxes of R50 ammo I decided to back off the screws on the tuner and after a few test groups the next twist of the wrench I yielded two shots in one hole, so from there I kept shooting until I had actually put 10 shots nearly into one hole. Here is the target shot.

Before the mid barrel tuner the rifle was yielding groups around .150-.160 for five shots on a real consistent basis testing a few days in a row.

James,

That's some really GREAT shooting! Could you expand a bit on how the tuner works? I looked at it on Dan Killough's website, but there are no instructions. Do you move it up/back on the barrel, or just tighten/loosen the screws until it shoots as good as can be obtained?

Thanks!

Dennis

Great shooting, James! And it wasn't just the tuner -- it was you operating the rifle.

I was interested to see that you were shooting R-50. Eley and Lapua get most of the attention but after trying them and RWS in my new barrel I settled on R-50. You may already know this, but if not -- Anschutz North America sells RWS and has a very attractive lot testing program and reasonable prices.

Someone with more knowledge of how the mid barrel tuner works will have to chime in. I honestly have no clue. Another member here told me where to locate it on the barrel and how to tune it. So I did as he said and produced the group pictured.

As for aim point per the other poster asking. There is a little tiny dot in the center of the target. I aimed at that and fired away once it was gone I just centered the dot of my scope inside the ring and just kept shooting.

TNX, just wondered why the accuracy testing you did "used up" your aimpoint. OTOH, if I saw a group like that starting to appear, I'd prolly' do the same. ;)

I had a Logun PH that would shoot like that. It was probably the most accurate rifle I ever shot.

Very nice group! As far as mid barrels, I've had best luck getting all I can out of the muzzle tuner, then adding the barrel tuner. Looking at what you have, I don't think a mid barrel tuner will help if it constintaly shoots as pictured. My best rifle I couldn't make better with a mid barrel, only equil so why use it. Another rifle it helped a bunch. Again, nice group!.

This group posted was with using it. Before this the rifle was shooting in the mid .1's with same ammo and tuner settings.

James, You should take that rig to the Chattanooga rifle club, they have about a $2000 bounty for the first ARA 2500 score shot on the range, that rifle is smoking!

I'm glad I could help out James..Awesome ten shot group!! Please don't bring that to Piney Hill the locals beat me bad enough as it is!

I'm gonna order a one piece rest and get a handle on using it then I'll go and shoot a few of their matches
