Aluminum Bed

Correct me please if i am wrong. If i were to get a 2/3 inch piece of aluminum and "scrape out the middle" and mill in holes to fit the trigger bolts etc, with a little more precission then i described), would it not work as a aluminum bed. Im considering building a f class stock and this method seem the easiest because i dont need a wood fit like fibreglass bedding does>

Pillars are metal posts that go completely through the stic and support the receiver on one end that the triggerm plate on the other end. They keep the stock material from compressing and provide a stable support for the receiver.

John won the 2007 & 2008 NRA Long Range Championship so you can believe what he sells works.

Pillar bedding merely compensates for the compression wood or fiberglass undergoes when action mounting bolts are snugged down. Those pillars provide a much more compression-resistant, larger surface area & stable stress transmission mechanism into stock material than can be achieved otherwise.

so the pillars just stop the wood from compressing when i tightenen the bolts thus stopping the altering point of impact in different conditions and different tightenss of bolts, but I still need an aluminum bed

Yes, pillars stop the stock from being compressed when tightening the screws...they are used in conjunction with some form of epoxy bedding compound. A bedding block can be used instead of pillars, but is in no way a better system. The barreled action should be bedded with an epoxy compound whether a block or pillars are used. The popular choices include Devcon, Marine-Tex, Bisonite, J-B Weld and others. The key is when the screws are pulled tight, there is no stress imparted to the action.

ok, because i need to be on the cheap so im building my own stock. The alloy block in conjunction with pillars would be good? enough. Ive heard that the compounds can move in different weathers but blocks are fine in every weather. I machinig all my own parts at school so they have to be simmple and inletting a stock would be hard

Stock fitting and action bedding are both skills learned with practice over time, so they're probably the more traditional route to a system that doesn't change because of the wider applicability of the techniques used.

You have an advantage in being able to craft your own aluminum bedding block. The goal is the same: minimize or eliminate the factors causing variations in stresses in a shooting system.

Given your capabilities, you may also want to look into the advantages of a barrel clamp mount that leaves the action completely free of mounting stress. For F-Class where weight isn't something to be too concerned with, it may be even better than what you have in mind. Check out the Daily Bulletin of November 15 for a nice description of a super accurate 1000 yard 6.5-06 Improved rig built with a clamp system. A semi-production aluminum stock with barrel clamp has been available from Mike Ross of Ross Precision.,www.rossprecision.com)

If a guy were to choose one, pillar bedding or a stock with a full length bedding block, which is better? Pros and Cons on either.

-Thanks

Aluminum expands twice as much as steel does per given change in temperature. Second bedding is stress free while a bedding block isn't unless machined to perfectly fit your action or bedded similarly. The aluminium blocks shown in the pictures do not appear to be prepared correctly for bonding in a stock.
