Alternative to Brownells modeling clay?

I went to using hot glue for most areas a few years back and I like it better than any clay etc but not for really big areas. like a mag well. I've done those different ways, case by case but a filler block and the seal things up with hot glue works too.

I also use Play Dough. Very easy to form and clean up.
Not a deal breaker and it does work pretty well but is loaded with salt unless the newer stuff is different. Lots of options but if you haven't tried hot glue, you should give it a try. Maybe you decide it's best in some areas vs others but I think you'll be glad you gave it a try.

People have been telling me about the salt content for decades. Never had one issue using it. I've left bedding jobs for a week and all it does is dry out, shrink and that makes removal that much easier.

Don't know the original MFG but a buddy of mine, years ago,
gave me a large brick of modeling clay from his body shop.
Automotive paint and repair shops would have it.....Check with
Bcz'......

Duct Seal (aka dum dum) typically used on service entrance cable into meter base. Won't dry out and adheres better.
Yep.. got a few pounds that is over 35 years old, still good as new. Use it over and over again.

Tin benders call it Bear Sh--t. Original use was to seal up HVAC ducting joints.

Yes, no big deal. I guess maybe, big maybe..if some was left in there and it was against blueing but I'm not sure it would hurt in then either. Like I said...not a deal breaker and it probably doesn't matter at all. Given the choice and if I liked something else equally or close to as well, I might lean toward something without the salt but like you, I've never actually seen it be a problem and I used to use it because of how easy it cleans up vs clay. Again, my favorite has become hot glue.

FWIW- the Mrs. makes her own playdoh with wheat flour, salt, and water, and food dye- but it doesn't smell as good as the real thing.

Been using it for over 15 years and have never seen an issue with play doh. Its not going to cause any finish damage sitting for a day and I would guess the salt on people skin is worse on a firearm finish than play doh.

30 years ago, I was really interested in bullet casting (still am) and making my own bullet lube (not so much). I ended up with a whole big coffee can full of beeswax and neatsfoot oil combination that's about the same consistency as plasticine. It's pretty great for filling voids for bedding and once it's broken free successfully, it can be melted off with a heat gun and reused. Any residue will easily wipe off with mineral spirits. Probably not exactly cost effective these days, but since I'm a total packrat, it was handy. Plus, it's a pretty great leather treatment.
