alteenitives to varget

GEtting ready to start developing a load for a 6 br in a savage 1 in 8 barrel using 105 and108 grn pills. I have a lot of vargrt that I use in my x47 and my creed. I waa thinking about saving it for them and using a different powder.

I Have read some good things about n540 and was thinking about that. rl 15 as well but wonder about the temp sensitivitybeing in NH and shooting year round from single digits to tripple digits.

WHat do you all think?

Mine loves H4895 with the 105 Bergers. IMR 4064 also gave very good accuracy but is not as temp stable. In my particular rifle H4895 gave me better velocity with slightly less powder than Varget. I am running 29.0gr of H4895 in Norma cases and CCI #200 primers for a velocity of 2847fps. My Varget load is 30.3gr with a velocity of 2855fps.

Remember this, HUGE temp swings will effect how hot a certain powder / charge will act. You basically have 2 choices: 1.) develop a winter / summer load OR better yet; 2.) a W-I-D-E accuracy window with a temp stable powder. VV N "anything" is going to be more sensitive to large swings in temps than Hodgdon's "Extreme" line. RL-15 is pretty temp stable, although it is doubtful it is as stable as Varget. Let's say you got an accuracy window from 29.7 to 30.2 with RL-15. Split the difference with a charge weight of either 29.9 or 30.0 and you will probably be good to go all year. OR develop a cool weather load and a warm weather load.

THanks guys. Have a couple pounds of h4895 at home now and will pick up a pound of rl5 today.

I Thought rl15 was more sensitive to temp then n540

RL15, 203B, LRM can be very accurate but it's been my experience you need to stay on top of it for temperature swings when it cools down. As long as you're not right on the ragged edge of too much pressure, it seems to hold together pretty well when the temp goes up from where I tested. If the temperature drops around 30-40* from where I tested, I needed to add around .3 grain to get back where I needed to be. These powders do shoot extremely well though.
My 2 cents anyway.

might want to try 8208 xbr

if you are already shooting Varget in other cartridges, why not just buy more varget and shoot it in your new BR. I use varget exclusively in 4 different BR barrels. As everyone else has already stated, varget is an extremely temp stable powder and given your temperature scenarios I would have to agree with shootdots on his recommendation. Plus varget seems fairly easy to get your hands on these days compared to a couple years ago. Unless you just want to tinker with different powsders, I would stick with varget if it were me.

I have a Savage with Shilen 6BR barrel and could not get Varget to shoot as well as I wanted with Berger 105 Hybrids. Switched bullets and no help. Tried some N140 I had and cut the groups to 1/3 moa at 300 yds. Varget best was > 1/2 moa.

Has anyone else tried 4166? It's given me some promising results. And it seems to be in stock about everywhere, around here anyway. Burned very cleanly in the rifle I tried it in. WD

Does that mea the 100 series is less sensitive to temp?

Yes - but not as good as VarGet or other ADI / Hodgdon 'Extreme' grades. N150 is an excellent choice for the cartridge with 105-108s. VarGet was unobtainable in Europe for so long some years back that people had to find alternatives and N150 turned out to be the surprise winner here (UK). Most people have stuck with it and not returned to Hodgdon grades, even though the supply position is better now.

Strangely though, I'm told N150 doesn't work in the Dasher, and VarGet remains first choice there.

MIGHT WANT TO TRY THE NEW IMR 4451 ITS RITE WITH VARGET AT THE BURN RATE
That has not been my experience testing it in 6.5 Creedmoor/140gr and 135gr projectiles. On the burn rate chart I have consulted, Varget is a ways towards the hotter end compared to IMR4451. H4350 and IMR 4451 are very close.
