Almost time to rebarrel my 22-250

It is a long action Savage with an Adams and Bennet sporter tube. Being a 14 twist barrel it has shot many bullets very well, way better than expected but alas the several thousand rounds sent down the tube has done her in. The heaviest bullet shot in it has been the 60 grain flat based Hornady HP. Very good accuracy and took several deer with it. My favorite bullets for coyote hunting have been just about any of the 50 grain bullets and the 52 grain Speer HP. I used the 55 gr. NBT's but found they can be very destructive which doesn't really matter much here in Texas but in Wyoming the pelts can be worth a few bucks. At any rate I want to go back with a somewhat heavier contour and possibly move to a 12 twist. I am thinking of using a "light Palma" contour as a balance of a bit more weight up front and adding 2" of barrel going from 24" to 26". The rifle has been my specified coyote rifle in the past but have played with the 243 and 223 some since it has been put on the reserve list. Seems I really like the 22-250 as a coyote rifle. I don't want to fast twist it because I like to use and have plenty of old style soft point bullets in the 45 to 60 grain weights. Shots I will take will be from very close to no more than 400 yards if there isn't much wind. Is there anything wrong with the light Palma contour? Or would a Heavy Sporter contour be just as good?

i just put a wilson number 4 contour on a rem 700 i think that was a nice fit . you could go #5 contour for some more weight .kreiger also make a 4 1/2 contour . i don't believe for hunting purposes you need to go to heavy because the 22 bore is so small those barrels mentioned carry good weight and wall thickness. good luck with the project . www.therifler.com

l recently shortened the length on my Rem HV from 26 to 24'' when Jarrett Rifles installed a brake.
For me, it was like a whole NEW gun! The balance was much improved. The rifle handled better with
the shorter tube too. Group shrunk by more than HALF.
Rick, l can't predict what your gun will do. l discovered that less was BEST!

I’d look hard at the Criterion Barrels sold by Northland Shooters Supply. I’ve used four of them and every one of them shot as well as any top name barrel I have ever used. Had an 8” twist Light Varmint Criterion chambered in 22-250 that would shoot < 1/2 MOA for five shots at 700 yards with 75gr Amaxes launched at 3200fps.

Agree with, John above,.. for Rem or, Savage, Rifles,. CRITERION Barrels for Me, too !
Have one on, an SS Rem 700 Lefty, in 6 XC and it's,.. a "Tack Driver" !
When my 1-14 Tw, .22-250 Rem "goes south" I'll buy, a 1-9 TW, Criterion in .22-250 Ackley to STOP case growth ( as I HATE, Trimming cases ) but, Love,.. the .22-250's, range / power and versatility !

Ackley definitely stops case growth but sure burns barrel. Shot my brass 6 times neck sizing before going to FL sizing. W760...45.2 gr..55 gr Sierra..4064fps...very accurate rocket. Barrel life sucked shooting dogs.

Went to 22Br....very awesome round. Very awesome....

@ D Coots,..
I hear you, on the Ackley and have thought about, the .22 XC and .22 GT for that, very reason !
The Rem 700 short Action, feeds the .22-250 and 6 XC sized cases, Flawlessly and I have, a Ton of Cases !
And I would only need to Buy,.. a New Sizer !
So was thinking that, I'd "Down load" the .22-250 Ackley ( it sucks to be, an Old cheap, Bastard. like me LOL ).
Since i have some rounds left, in the ole' Girl,.. I may re-think my position !
The 6 mm GT, doesn't work as good as, either, the 6 Creed or, 6 XC but, I've heard that, the .22 GT is, "Sweet" !
And YES, the .22 BR would be, a "good one" too,.. IF it feeds, in my Action.

I hate trimming brass also. And Criterion or a Shilen prefit is where I was planning to get a barrel.

I have that 22xc reamer and I REALLY wish I could get some folks hot to help me test it. I think it is going to be awesome.

I have the 6xc dies in stock and all you need is a 246 bushing :)

So, the 22xc has a .300" length neck just like a 6br. I would think it could be possible to go really short on the freebore. Like maybe no freebore at all for all bullets up to say 75 grain all the way down to 40 grain in the 22 caliber.

Any experience with the .224 77-75 grainers and zero freebore?

You want to know what would be really fun? If we could get a group of guys together and I will make the barrels and we can all test it at once. Like a group project.

I really think the 22xc is the better varmint solution because it will feed in a repeater, good small primer brass is available really cheap, and it is very easily loaded very conservatively if the user so chooses to save barrels. Or it could be hopped up to go the other way. If I provide the barrels cheap enough, who cares if you burn up a barrel? Really? Just get another one!!!

Man if you had a barrel chambered in 6MM Remington or 22-250 I would have already ordered one.

I can certainly can get a 22-250 reamer.

Part of the magic of my happy customers is that they shoot the calibers I suggest.
I would happily use the caliber's you suggest If I had the dies and the brass collection for the rounds you chamber for like I do for the 6MM Remington and 22-250. However when my 260 barrel starts loosing it's grip and I now know your ability to be flexible I will look you up for a barrel. The 260's stock has a barrel channel wide enough for a heavy varmint contour. The Savage needs to be light enough for lugging around by an older guy.

Bradley, I wish you would get some more reamers because at your prices a guy couldn’t afford not to buy your barrels. I have the calibers you have barrels for but am always looking for different stuff.

When my .22-250 Barrel "goes South", I'm going to be looking hard at, the .22 XC, as I Love, the 30* Shoulder and LONG Neck, in a 23 to 24 inch "Sporter" weight. And they FEED perfectly, in a Rem 700, Short action !
Wanting, a "walking Varmint" Rifle for Yotes, W/ some Bench use, on Sage Rats about, a .650 Muzzle dia.
I have a 6 XC with a 24" .700 dia Muzzle ( 9.5 lbs ) and not enjoying, carrying it, too Far,..
BUT,. it drives, Tacks !
