Alliant Reloder 50.... Good powder? Time limited chance to buy...

Quick question. Is Alliant Reloder 50 good powder? Have time limited opportunity to buy a few jugs at a good price. Read it's popular with many folks shooting 800 gr bore riders and solid copper bullets. I'm shooting Armalite AR-50 and have heard Amax 750 is often a good performer in my gun. But I will be testing various bullets obviously as I have no idea what my gun will like. 1000 yard 50 BMG benchrest is main use. Just don't know if I should jump on this deal or not. Any opinion?

You might want to go over the the FCSA visitors forum if not a FCSA member. That being said, the 750 gr AMAX has the potential to start coming apart above 2700 fps.

If you have an opportunity on a deal I would go for it. Remember you are only going to get about 200 - 250 rounds out of an 8 lb jug so it will go quick especially if you shoot 2 classes/match (100 -125 for sighters and record).

H 50BMG is the standard match powder for the AMAX.
For the solids > 750 most guys are running VV or RL50.
I suspect you will find a combo that works in your AR based on RL50 and a solid projo. Lots of guys are getting good results transitioning over to RL50.

Thanks man. I actually joined FCSA (again) the other night. Had done so in 2006 as well. Ordered 25 back issues of the mag. Hoping to shoot in Georgia 1000 yard match in April if I can get my stuff ready.

Like you said, sounds like 800 gr coppers and boreriders are getting lots of RL50. H50 seems to be preferred with 750 gr Amax. I'm hoping RL50 can get Amax faster. The numbers I see aren't that impressive with H50.

I just ordered 9 lbs of each, that will give me enough to test many different projectiles. No telling what the gun will like. But many report great results with H50 and 750 Amax in the AR-50.

I got 360 once fired Barret cases, IMI. Bought 50 boreriders and 600 RWS primers from Dale Sorenson at TenX yesterday. Will get some Lehigh hybrids and boreriders. of course some Amax. Not sure what else, these are main ones I'm familiar with so far.

Dropping a Jewel trigger in the AR-50 soon. Ordered a custom bipod with two sets of legs, long and short, along with a monopod from Shots Gunsmithing yesterday. That way I can go bench or prone, had the longer set of legs extra long, as I'm 6'6" 320. Could come in handy having that extra adjustment. Just need to figure out what press and dies. Having a hard time deciding.
