Alliant Reloder-16

I have been playing with RE 16 the last 2 weeks with a new Krieger 7.5 twist 6 Dasher ( lapua brass). What I found is it was real easy to come up with a SD of 5 to 6 while shooting through a LadRadar. At 100 yards it was shooting a little ragged 1 hole 4 shot groups with a 108 Berger. It done this 3 times and shot great on 2 different days. This was done while testing different powders, and also with the 105 Berger Hybrids. I tried Varget, H4350 and RE-16. If you know your rifle and have good shooting habits you can get a good read while testing and here is what I found. There was no scientific testing by any means. Just trying different things to see what stands out. Lots of shooters want to know if anyone has done any Re-16 testing. Well I am one of a few, letting you know what I found while testing. With the same load ( over 35.0) I got 3055 with the Ber 105 and 3000FPS with the 108's with SD's at 5 to 6. This barrel shoots the 108 better then the 105. Surprise surprise. I did some testing with the new Norma (thicker) brass. Even with a 14" drop tube, the case was too full, and crunched powder. At a 600 yard gong match, it shot extremely well. Out of 15…. 5" plates I hit 14….in a row. I am a believer of RE 16. You wanted some testing results, and now you have it, and you can take it for what it's worth. DJB

anybody played with this in the 284 win?

Only in my hunting rifle. 24.5" Criterion barreled Savage 110. Both Nosler 150 BT and 160 Accubond are getting me under .4" for 5 shots. ES around 15-18 and SD about 5 for both. I'll be eager to see how temp stable it is. Load was developed around 50 degrees and I'll shoot it through the summer into the 90's and by hunting season it will be in the 10-30 degree range.

What caliber rifle?

I have a 284 WIN long range BR/F-Open gun. I started with 3841sc and tried different bullets from 162 AS-MAX , 175 SMP and Berger 180 Hybrids. The gun shot the A-AMXes the best. Tried RL-17 as I use that in my Swiss K-31. It actually worked better than the short cut! I used RL-17 and made some prize money with it and 162 A-MAXes in F Class practice matches. Then,
along comes RL-16! I was concerned about the RL-17 temp stability and the stable RL-16 sounded good. Well, it continued shooting good, but it was hard getting good groups but good scores came easy.
Then along came the demise of the A-MAX and the birth of the ELD-M.. Same story, the 162 ELD-M shot great. Got some 180 Gr ELD-Ms and finally characterized my barrel for them, tuned the tuner to them and went to 600 yd bench rest practice and shot a 2.04" group at 600 yd! Not record setting, but the best this gun with me pulling the trigger ever shot!

This weekend is an NBRSA regional match as well as an F-Class practice match. I'm looking forward to it!

I hate to revive an old thread (;)), but I have a question. Read through the thread a couple of times....lots of comparo's between H4350 and the new wonder powder...RL 16. It seems that you guys like the RL 16 better than the H4350.

My question is this....do you like RL 16 better in the Dasher than RL 15 or Varget? RL 15, and to some extent, Varget, were THE GO TO POWDERS in the Dasher for all of the years that I shot LR BR. Have things changed? Anyone setting the world on fire with RL 16...it looks like records are falling weekly.

I just had a new 31" 4 groove .237 Krieger chambered up.....thinking about where to start. Things were WAY simpler when we had the choice of RL 15 and RL 15...maybe even RL 15. One powder....quick test.....go to match and shoot.

Thanks,
Tod

I’m using RL 16 in my Dasher with 110 SMK’s. Testing on SMT last month at Hurlburt AFB in the Fl panhandle. Mid range match third relay (first two used 105 hybrids) 200-12x Temp was mid 80’s.

No word on RL-16 in the Dasher in more than 5 years?
what to think...

I have shot a wheelbarrow fulls of 16 in a dasher. For F-class competition, it really was the cats pajamas. Most lots, 35.0gr (long drop tube and slow pour required) landed between 3000 & 3012 fps with 103-105gr bullets. One lot 34.8gr was the “spot”, same velocity.

When I started shooting 600 yard Benchrest, RL-16 would give me some small groups but never a winning 4target agg.
It would hold the 10 ring in F-class winter through summer, no issue.

Moran for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the rest of you for cabinet members.

Whidden has N-150 in stock, like $300 for an 8-pound keg. Only Varget was $500. NO RL-16 anywhere.

Am ordering now!
