Alliant power pro varmint

Several years ago I found a gun shop that was going out of business and had everything on sale. I picked up a fair bit of what they had left. One of the powders I bought was alliants power pro varmint. I have been very impressed by this powder and use it in my go to 223 load. Very consistent, high velocity without pressure signs, flows through powder measures great... It checks all the boxes.

Unfortunately it's discontinued and alliants load data has always been a little limited. I was thinking that this powder would possibly do well in 350 legend. I'm wrapping up a rifle build(bolt action) in 350 legend and was wondering if anyone had any information to share.

I have quite a few pounds left of this powder. Has anyone else used this in other calibers than 223? If so how do you like it. I'm particularly looking for information as to 350 legend, but would not hesitate to use it in other chambering as long as it's safe and a good fit for the cartridge/application.

Thanks in advance!

Alliant Varmint is my go to powder for my 250 Savage with the Sierra 75gr HP varmint bullet.

I'm on the lowish side of the charge weight getting about 3,150fps from a 24" barrel.

If you are in reference to Vista Outdoors canceling orders that has nothing to do with discontinuing any Alliant products. It had to do with Vista Outdoors selling off Federal which is the actual Distributor of the powder. Federal was selling the powder as Vista Outdoors because Vista owned the Trademark at the time. Federal/Alliant now is owned by Czechoslovak Group and the trademarks are held by some part of that organization.

That's good news to hear. I'm sitting on a few pounds now, but when I went to look online for load data it seemed to be listed as out of stock or discontinued from all of the regular retailers I use for powder. Sorry, didn't mean to spread rumors.

Also good to hear that it works well for 250 savage. I'm planning a build in the future on an old Mauser action in either 250 savage or 257 Bob, haven't made up my mind yet.

I've been really impressed by this powder. There's a website out there, natoreloading.com, that had some pretty surprising results with it in .223. I don't know if I'd go as hot of a load as he did, but nonetheless it seems like a good fit for .223 size cases. That's why I was thinking that it would work well with 350 legend. Close to the same pressure and case capacity between the two.

If it makes any difference, I'm shooting a 16 inch barrel and was really eyeing the 140 grain pointed bullets from bear creek ballistics, but if there's a better bullet I can work with that as well. The rifle has the original blind magazine in it(22-250), so I can seat the bullet as far out as I want to. I was hoping to push this bullet as fast as I can(safe loads only, not exceeding max load data) while still maintaining enough accuracy for deer hunting. After I get that load worked out, I was going to make a mouse fart load using 9mm cast bullets most likely with a different powder, maybe trail boss.

I use it in a 6.5 Grendel with 120/123s. It shoots impressively small groups out of a 18” barrel AR with a $99 trigger.

If no data available for it in the 350, Download Gordon's reloading tool and work up some data from it. I use it as a shortcut in load development. Use the software to find a load with estimated optimum barrel time. Then do a short ladder on each side of it

Thanks for all the responses, I really appreciate it! I've never heard of the Gordon's reloading tool, I'll definitely look into it.

I can see what tommeboy is saying In regards to the burn rate of power pro varmint, I have some powders that are in published load data that I can use, just figured I'd throw the question out there about varmint powder. Thanks again all!

You can use it in a straight wall. But you re going to need 100% casefill. And your vel will be about 1/2 of what you normally get. You can get away with a few things in a straight wall you can't in a bottleneck. It would be a waste of good powder but it would work just not ideal

Alliant varmint is too slow burning for 350L
Did extensive testing in 350. Alliant 2400 shot amazing with .037” group from a savage rifle and maker 125 gr bullet
