Alliant Power Pro 2000

I am running low (5 pounds left) on RL-15. I have been doing some research about the new Alliant Power Pro powders. Specifically, the Power Pro 2000. I know it has a burn rate similar to RL-15, Varget and just about sits on top of VV N540. I believe it may "fit the bill" of a powder to replace RL-15 if I run out as I doubt we will see it on shelves any time soon. However, there are a few things I can't seem to find out and I was wondering if anyone knows about it.. 1.) Is it at least reasonably temperature stable? 2.) Is it one of these "made for AR Style" rifles type powder? And finally 3.) Is it a clean burning or a dirty burning powder like RL-15? If you have any information, it would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks for your help..

Ben,
what I know is the stuff is not AR specific powder, mostly was designed for .308. I've shot loads developed at 70 degrees shoot just fine at 95 degrees, had a little more flattening of the primer but nothing runaway. I saw VERY dirty results until I upped the load into the right range. I started low and had great velocity so I thought I was fine but had bad accuracy and very dirty but once I upped it everything came into place.

You are correct on burn rate it falls in between the RL 15 & RL 17. I have found it works quite well with many calibers as long as you start low and work up and the calibers I have used it with are the 5.56, 6mm AR Turbo 40, 6.8 SPCII & .308 all in AR platforms. They say it was developed for the .223 (5.56) & .308 type cases using heavy bullets. I'm working right now on some loads using the 168 Sierra BTHP and have had good results just have to tweek it a bit.

Biggame: so it's burn rate should be right at IMR 4007... Do you have any idea if it is temp sensitive or is it at least fairly stable? RMinut (the prior person who wrote here) stated you need to kind of "get the pressure UP" or it will burn dirty, much like most RL Powders..

I have a 6.5 x 47 Lapua that shoots 123gr bullets with GREAT accuracy using RL-15. I am trying to find a reasonable substitute, without going to Varget, which I use for other purposes... I KNOW that IMR 4007 burns very clean and it is "relatively" temp stable, however, I used to (about 5 years ago) use 4007 in my first 6.5 x 47 without very much success. That is why I would rather look at a "new" powder.. I also appears to be a double based powder, like RL-15, however, having a spherical design rather than "stick" as in most powders I use.

I've used it in my older FTR rig with 185s and 200s. It likes to run on the higher end and is accurate when you get it right. The velocity you get with it is VERY good compared to Varget etc. As for temp stability, its not that bad and meters like water. I don't shoot it anymore not because of temp stability, but because it shot its best when loaded right on the edge of pressure and it was pretty hard on brass. I switched to N-150 and never looked back, speed isn't near as fast but accuracy is just as good if not better and brass last a lot longer. Your results may vary. I have friends running it in .223 with the heavies and love it.

I have only shot it in a pretty new rifle, so I cannot compare it to other powders in the same gun. In my X-Bolt with a 22 inch barrel, I am getting 2925 with 150 gr bullets, fast! Accuracy is a good steady sub-MOA. For a hunting gun I am very happy with it. I shot a hunting rifle match where I shot 50 rounds, the barrel cleaned real easy. Powder or the extremely smooth Browning barrel, I guess both played a part in the easy clean abilities.

It is a bit cheaper than other powders and I have been able to find it during this mad rush. I like it!

I hope that helps.

Aaron, I am sold on the powder just from this thread. If I should run dry of RL-15 and can't get any, I am going to buy some, do some development and if it shines>>>adios to RL-15! Thanks guys! I appreciate it!!
