I'm one of those "Garage gunsmiths". Done a few barrels for myself and a few friends. Tried setting back a Remington barrel on one of my rifles, a long story, nothing lined up nuff said about that. Now I only do new blanks. I keep the take off barrels and use them for practice, making bedding pillars and tomatoe stakes.

Why pick up the thread, just make a little longer thread relief. Shortgrass, I understand where you are coming from, but as only work for myself and Family I don't have that to worry about.

I have seen several barrels,used, adapted to different receivers and none had the threads picked up. The only had a longer thread relief. They still had plenty thread to torque down safely. That might not satisfy some craftsmen, but it will work just as well and could save the customer money. By the way, the ones that I'm speaking of were done by very noted accuracy smiths.

This is what I do, and I only work on my own guns. I have had some pretty spectacular luck setting back Remington chambers, but realize that there is so much work in them and aggravation that it would not be worth the time/money for a paying customer.

ON a sporter barrel, I take off about 3/8" to start with, then you have no issues on cleaning up the chamber. ON varmint barrels, there is no problem at all.

Alignment issues are enough to get a good man to start drinking hard liquor. Compromises may abound as Remington chambers and bore alignment are in the twilight zone at times, especially if you want 0.0003 run out or less on your finished chamber.

The worst Remington chamber I ever completed was in a blued sporter barrel last Spring in 223 AI. Alignment issues pissed me off so bad, I had to just keep walking off from it...took me 3 days to get through the job...madness. By the time I was through, the barrel shoots in the high 2's and 3's constantly, but it is hard for me to shoot that barrel due to all the aggravation I went through, and I know the alignment issues when I chamber a round....squirrel cage in my head is running full speed.

I'm a garage hobbiest and I've done two rem take offs. Pretty much the same amount of work as a blank. That isn't what makes the money for me. Not today!

I've done a few, but they were for myself or family. Never did one for a paying customer when I was in the business. Only time I picked up threads were when I rechambered a 300 wby to 308 Norma with a barrel with no relief. Also a few times on my own target rifles that I installed to set back the barrel. Everything works nice when you were the guy that did the original work. Last factory barrel I did was a 25-06 A-Bolt barrel to a 257 Rob, but that was a SR 98 budget build for my brother. Not really the same as the OP's circumstance, but still takes almost as much time as a new barrel. Not worth it IMO as a customer unless the barrel is octagon, or some other expensive barrel.
