I was thinking of rounds that would be on any list, Sure better rounds have come along but did they leave a following that can't be denied?

257 Weatherby!!!

Been around since 1944 and still King of the 25's and probably more popular now than ever.

No 9x19 ?

IMO the 30-30 doesn't belong on any list of "great" unless "popular" = "great"
It's really a pretty lame cartridge by today's standards, even for a lever gun.
The 9mm Parabellum is the same as the 9x19 (jonbearmon listed it). I would also add the 416 Rigby to this list (it's areal hoot with cast bullets)

The 30-30 has taken more deer than any other cartridge in history.
It certainly sounds true on the northern continent of America , but I would be careful with such a statement , the 303 British( UK, Canada ,Australia and New Zealand ) and the 7x57 have taken their fair share of deer population as well.

The 303Brit has to be on the list. The number of rifles chambered for the 303 probably has no peer and the round is still being used and manufactured.
D Mon you forgot the Indians and their factories, huge output.

he is a good way to start a chatter, i will list my idea of alltime great cartridges, if you agree/disagree or wish to add, do so

22lr
222
223
22-250
243
7x57
270
7-08
30-30
308
30-06
300wm
50 browning
357m
44m
45acp

considering their history/longevity, effect on other variations, overall usefullness and in some cases breakthrough preformance.

Great responses folks, so now I need to reflect on your suggestions and you are right I missed some,

1st the 7x57, 50bmg 270 are on the original list
2nd add the following
303
9mm par
all the BR cases starting with the original 30 then 7mm and now the 6mm and 22br
22ppc
6.5 man
280 rem, now starting to shine as it will out preform the 270, just did not have Jack O'conner

unfortunately I have little knowledge of the cartridges used outside the US.

Bob

unfortunately I have too little knowledge of cartridges used in Africa,

This thread was supposed to be about the "ALL TIME" great cartridges... It has everything under the sun on it.. Just about every cartridge has it's merits.. But many are not ALL TIME, as in a long time, and should not be on this list. We have degenerated this list to what everyone likes, not ALL TIME greats..

I'd still add:

338 Lapua Mag.

375 H&H Mag.
