I would add the 8mm mauser,6.5x55mm,22 hornet, .250 savage,303 savage,300 savage,45-70,30-40 krag as these are all instrumental cartridges in our history along with the infamous 9mm parabellum,38 special which opened the door for the 357 mag.

.222 Remington
.225 Winchester
6BR
6mm Remington
.25-20 Winchester
.25-06 Remington
6.5x55 Swedish Mauser
.260 Remington
6.5-284 Norma
.275 Rigby AKA 7x57mm
.30-30 Winchester
.30-40 Kraf
.308 Winchester
.30-06 Springfield
.300 SAUM
8mm Remington Magnum
.338 Winchester Magnum
.338 RUM
.375 H+H Magnum

These are my top picks only because I own them. ;D

I'm thinking the 308 has fostered more variations than any other, considering necking up, down, and shortening the case---even though it hasn't been around as long as some of the others. If there was only one cartridge brass a person should always have plenty of, it is the 308.
Additionally, there are numerous bullet weights and styles available.
It also fits your criteria.

No 9x19 ?

IMO the 30-30 doesn't belong on any list of "great" unless "popular" = "great"
It's really a pretty lame cartridge by today's standards, even for a lever gun.

I would have to say the 6.5x55 is one of those all time greats. Look how long the cartridge has lasted and is still used today. Many people still compete with it and by far for good reason. They really knew what they were doing when they designed that one.

270 is on the original list,

The 30-30, i have to disagree with you, it is a basic, working round that has served literally hundreds of thousands and most likey millions of shooter, hunters, and fostered many other chamberins with variations such as the 25-35, 219, 225, 35, donaldson wasp, and many imsha chamberings.

Bob

Jon is exactly right about the 30-30.

I would also like to add the BB guns we used as kids, like the "Red Rider" and others of course! Guys that never owned one, I feel sorry for them, it taught me a lot.

Performance Ranking:

#1 = .22 LR

.243 Win (perfect whitetail cartridge)

.257 Wby (I don't shoot Wby's anymore but this is a beloved cartridge by walking hunters)

6.5 Creedmoor (although I shoot 260)

7 Rem Mag (although I shoot 284)

300 Win Mag (I love 300 Win Mags for some dang reason)

338 Lapua

Heritage Order:

#1 = .22 LR
#2 = .308 Win and offspring. if you can't do it with the kids of .308 win you can't do it with anything. ;D

I'd like to hear from our European and African hunters. In the meantime, I nominate the 9x57 Mauser and it's successor the 9x62 Mauser. And of course:
