There are quite a few vessels in service now that are Diesel Electric. We actually were involved in the past 4 years with the building of two Port Arkansas 30 car ferrys that are diesel electric.
This thing is a true Hybrid, The Battery is the primary source of energy to run the motors, the Diesel engines simply charge the Battery.
