Align Boring Strut Barrels For Thordon Rivertough Bearing Conversion

Locomotives are diesel electric. Works pretty good and very smooth
Locomotives are standard diesel electric, or in many cases, pure electric. Neither of these involve a battery.

There are quite a few vessels in service now that are Diesel Electric. We actually were involved in the past 4 years with the building of two Port Arkansas 30 car ferrys that are diesel electric.

This thing is a true Hybrid, The Battery is the primary source of energy to run the motors, the Diesel engines simply charge the Battery.

one of the engineers on this project told me that the vessel could run for around 50 minutes with the Diesel engines shut off.

As sort of a joking statement, I told him that they had in fact resurrected the propulsion system of a WW-2 Submarine.

Using the diesel to charge the batteries allows for a smaller diesel than if it is direct diesel to generator to drive motor because the batteries can provide for surge power. Modern batteries have the same efficiency independent of the load not so for most internal combustion engines. The battery system allows the diesel to run at a constant load probably close to its most efficient point.

Jackie have you seen the battery pack? I know a battery the size of the floor of a compact car is around $30,000. I cant imagine replacing one big enough to run a push boat for 50mins.

I have not seen the battery, just the “room” that will house it. It is about 15x10.

From what I am told, the first design was not satisfactory, so there is a delay.

The going cost for vessel this size with conventional Diesel power is around 4.5 million. From what I gather, this vessel will be about $700,000 more.
