airrifle for coyotes

I live in an area where we cannot discharge firearms within the city limits. However, we have a lot of coyotes, and they are getting more confident and brazen about being around us humans in our neighborhood. Pets end up missing. I am taking no chances with my small grandchildren when they visit. I am told we can use air guns - pellet rifles/pistols - to scare the coyotes away. I am unfamiliar with air guns. Any thoughts about which air gun - rifle or pistol - would be suitable for this purpose.

I'd use leghold traps and a baseball bat. They make high power air rifles, but they are pricey and harder to use than firearms.

You should check with your local hunting regs prior to popping some yotes with an air rifle, I would do that just to know if I was in the right or not.

There are now a number of air guns that are more than adequate for coyotes. Most of the .25 cal PCP's and up get the job done easily. Most are accurate enough to kill coyotes at 100yds although some of the slower ones might not quite have enough energy to get the job done ethically. There are now plenty of big bore air guns in the .357 to .50 cal range. There are several PCP's in .22 cal that will handle a coyote. Check out Pyramyd Air, a very reputable dealer, and Precision Air Guns and Supplies. You can google either of them. If you end up at Air Guns of Arizona, don't try to buy from the website, sometimes it works, most times it doesn't if you read the reviews. If it were me, I would love to have a Daystate Wolverine 303 or an FX Boss (also .303).

Single shot 22 loaded with 22 shorts. Less noise than an air rifle and 22 shorts will penetrate a 2x4. I have had to unfortunately dispatch overly aggressive critters that a few undesirable families would allow to free roam after animal control agents knocked off.

They make some that are pretty powerful. Scare them away? some are as powerful as a 357mag. Pass through might be a huge concern.

Ilegal in most, if not all places, also very inhumane. So the neighbors Scotty gets loose and comes to see you. Do you really want to give him a slow mercifulless death ?

With a 22 or one of these 'super' air guns, one can pick and choose targets and not take out innocents indiscriminately.

I know little about air rifles other than Red Ryders. Logically speaking if there are some that are considered powerful enough to take a coyote at 100 yds....then there is also the chance of ricochets. A suppressed .17 HMR is what I would use being extremely selective in the line of fire. I know that .17 gr. jacketed bullet has very little chance of ricochet. As with most things in life, you must weigh the risks.

Forget about using a pellet gun to scare coyotes away, unless you plan to use the air rifle as a baseball bat and club it to death. The heaviest 25 caliber pellets available have less than 40 foot pounds of energy (FPE) at the muzzle. Not enough energy, even with a perfectly placed headshot through one of the eyes on a coyote. Once that pellet leaves the barrel, the FPE drops very quickly. At fifty yards, you'll have less than 8-10 FPE. When you look at ADVERTISED feet per second (FPS), and FPE, it is always listed with the light weight pellets, not the heavies needed for hunting. I have killed a number of squirrels, rabbits, a few raccoons and other small critters using my air guns. They work just fine for that.

Edit: State Statute 9-6-7, B, section A - inside the city limits a person may discharge: (3) an air gun in an enclosed building or shooting facility specifically designed to prevent a projectile discharge by the air gun from traveling beyond the boundaries of the building or shooting facility.

It appears, where you reside, you can't legally use an air gun to scare away the coyotes.

Killing Coyotes within City Limits is generally illegal. Load a .17 cal. air rifle with felt cleaning pads (add a drop or two of oil to make them heavier so they will fly further and harder) and blast away. They can not penetrate anything beyond cardboard and hurt like hell. An electric fence line close the their lower chest height may deter them as well but may be an issue with your Grandkids if left on while they visit.

Here in Missouri you can deer hunt with air rifles so I'm pretty certain that a coyote would not be a problem except the price of one to do the job

Yep. Some are behind on air gun technology, see video's where they kill hogs with these things nowadays .

Missouri was one of the first states to allow the use of air gun's for deer hunting. A few others also allow it. Minimum 40 caliber, and usually PCP only, which is heavy, and expensive. I have used my .177 for many years, but am limited to animal size. Much like archery, you are extremely limited in distance for a reliable kill. With properly placed shots, they kill as quickly as anything else.

(maybe the NRA museum). It was much feared by the Native American tribes not only for it's
power but because it could be fired multiple ties without reloading which the expedition was
happy to show off to keep the peace with some troublesome tribes.
