Advise/Tips For Selling Rifle

CH87

Silver $$ Contributor
Good Morning, I am looking for some advise/tips for selling a rifle that I do not feel I will use anymore in this stage of my life. To be honest, we just built our new home and the grass is growing in South Louisiana already so I need the funds for a mower right now … because my previous push mower is way undersized now. I would appreciate anything you members are willing to share to make this as smooth as possible as I have never sold a rifle before. The FFL and shipping process seems daunting. I rebarreled it a few years ago but have yet to even fire a round down the new tube due to a couple kids, hurricanes, and house floods that put a hampering on any F-Class type shooting activities for me. Would like to sell everything for the rifle too, I.e., dies, trimmer, bullets, etc. Again, anything shared would be appreciated. Thank you

You can post a for sale listing in here. Be sure to itemize and include pix. Specify if you will sell items separately.

If the buyer is out of state you can ship the rifle to a FFL in the buyers state. I just sold a pistol ans used Ship My Gun. It worked pretty good and was not expensive.

If you post pictures and a good description on this forum, members can give you a good idea of what it "might" be worth.

If you have an FFL that will handle shipping for you (for a fee), it takes some of the challenge out of the shipping end. Recognize that some FFL's refuse to accept shipment from an individual, even though it is legal to do so. Problems with individuals failing to include a copy of their driver's license (required) and information on who the firearm is being transferred to, account for some of the reason why.

Failing to adequately pack the rifle to withstand the movement/abuse it will be subjected to during shipping is the result of most of the damage to firearms during shipping.

Some years back I sold a couple of rifles using ads on this site. Before I would accept payment or ship, I established email and phone contact, and insisted that the buyers send an email indicating that he had seen all of the pictures that I emailed to them, of every possible view and small defect. There were perhaps a dozen each. Today, with my Teslong bore scope being able to shoot a video, that I can put on a fee image sharing site, I would send a link to a video as well. My point was to make sure that no one could say that I had misrepresented anything. I double wrapped the rifles using boxes from factory rifles and another over that, with some packing material between, and since I knew that UPS had handled all of the rifles for Remington's trigger recall, and their rates were good by comparison, I shipped with them, which had to be done from a local shipping center, since retail outlets will not ship firearms. Given the amount I made it clear that I would ship when the check cleared. Everything went as planned with no problems. Of course I shipped to a confirmed FFL that I had contacted before shipping. Things may have changed since I sold those rifles, so I would check with potential shippers and not assume anything.

I have spoke to a local FFL recently about shipping for me. He also said I could have it there on consignment but do not want it handled by every Joe blow that walks in. I would assume the buyer would have a FFL lined up to accept the rifle. Who is responsible for establishing communication between the two? Do they reach out to each other once provided info? Do I have to play middle man during the process? Also, thanks for the advise so far! Good tips!

Also, regarding what’s it’s worth. I have an idea what I want for it…I know I won’t get back what I have into it. Would one post info/pics on the main board regarding what fellow members would value the item prior to me listing it? I dont want to post something incorrectly that doesn’t belong in the classifieds and get banned. I’ve always enjoyed this site…although I’ve always read it as a non-member until recently.

If you want the smoothest method and safest but not necessarily the best price, I would seek out a local FFL and obtain their interest in buying the rifle with accessories.

I did this exact same thing about 2 years ago when I sold my 308 with dies, bullets, case gauge, 30 caliber Dewey rod, etc. My local smith took it all. I also did this with my 22 250 and accessories.

If you shot "F Class" you must know some competitors. You could contact them and see if they are interested. But I would only go that route if I knew the individual.

The one thing I would not do is advertise and have unknown people coming to my house to buy a firearm. Or sale a firearm to an unknown person who may have a criminal background. Going through an FFL keeps you out of legal consequences of a firearms sale, especially these days.

Agreed, not having visitors to the house. I’ve lost contact with the guy that got me into shooting 600yds and the fellow that hosted the shoots has since passed. I think FFL will be the safest but seems there is a learning curve on how this process works. Hopefully there is a potential buyer on here that has experience with FFL transfers and we will be able to link everyone one up and get it to his dealer smoothly.

I wouldn't want to rely on a buyer to determine how the rifle is transferred.
I strongly recommend you talk with an FFL - as others have mentioned.

Personally, I would go through an FFL even for in state sales to ensure there is documentation of the change in ownership.

I guess I was unclear or just ignorant. I was meaning (and assuming) hopefully a potential buyer has experience with transfers and knows best way (correct way) to get our FFLs to link up to do the transfer. I already have one on my end that will ship it, but the buyer would chose an FFL of their liking to receive the rifle. Correct?

A potential buyer more than likely will have some experience, especially from a site like this one. But you are correct in your assumption.
It's actually pretty simple for the receiving ffl dealer to get his info to the shipping ffl.
The real problems can occur once it's in the hands of the carrier.... but that's whole 'nother conversation.

Yes, have had a few issues with shipping items in the past few years. Any preference amongst members here? Also, I’ll check into this “Ship My Gun”. I’ve read it mentioned here before too.

It’s not necessary to ship FFL to FFL, but I do.
The receiving end needs to go to an FFL.
If convenient I would reach out to where you have shot and see if there is an interest there.

Thoughts on what’s its worth? Zero rounds down this tube.

Thinking of posting with it: PT&G reamer, Redding Dies and a few neck bushings, possum hollow case Trimmer with rifle.

Also have a 1000 or so 6mm 107gr Sierra Matchkings and a couple-few hundred Lapua 6mmBR unfired cases that I will list. Would you try to sell this separately?

If it is a high end rifle, consider gunsinternational. I would list it here first. Guys here are pretty sophisticated. easier to deal w someone who knows some stuff. Be aware shipping long guns w very good packing will take you a full morning and a chunk of money. remember that foam packing will rub the finish off a wood stock and may even mark blue steel. I wrap my FAs in soft worn out cotton rags then pack accordingly. also real hard to find a long high quality box. your local big ffl seller may have a high quality cardboard boc for you. be sure to leave heavy cusion on both ends for shock absorber purposes. Best of all, sell local and do a face to face, provided you have checked out the other party!!

I would sell the brass and bullets separately. everyone has special shopping list these days. price is best w shipping included.
