Burris XTR Signature Rings will let you add MOA with their inserts. They also offer other advantages that you can read on their web site.

Advance Armament MK13 Brake. Needs 5/8-24 muzzle threads.

If money is tight, spend your cash on ammo and reloading components before you purchase a brake.

Good Shooting

The Vortex GE will not take you very much passed 1,000 yards. It has barely half the moa elevation compared to Tactical LR scopes.

The Vortex GE is excellent for up to 1,000 yard F-class and 1k br. With the GE to get to 1,000 yards with your 308win you'll need about 30 to 35 moa of adjustment. GE has about 55moa total elevation. Half of the 55moa will be usable, so with a 20moa base you'll have a total of around 37moa elevation. So you'll want at least a 30moa base to comfortably reach 1k with your 308win.
(edit:... my math sucks ! with a 20moa rail, the Vortex GE would give you 47moa total elev. travel. Plenty for a 308win out to 1,000yards. Thanks forum member Rogmay for correcting me ;))

You can use the XTR signature rings (excellent rings and very recommended), with them you can get 40 moa extra elevation.

The 308 Winchester cartridge is ok for up to 1k, maybe 1,250 yards with the right loads and in the right environment, but there are much better choices for LR shooting.
On the bright side, you'll get excellent barrel life from your 308win and if you don't handload there is plenty of good factory match ammo.

Get yourself the APA little bastard brake and don't look back.

Very thankful for the advise. I was wondering about what moa rail to go with. Been reloading for years make my own projectiles and powder coat them. all pistol and some small rifle. From following this site I started turning the necks and weighing and sorting before loading. Currently using federal gmm. 175gr. As for LR shooting don't plan on competition shooting just at my own farm. The max distance I could get by removing a few trees is 1400 yards. As for now 800 yards is good for me just plicking around if I want to go longer that would give me a reason to get into a custom build. LOL. Richard

I'm sure this range you have will have a lot of guys drooling, with a little work you can shoot little groups with Savage and have a lot of fun trying.

Muzzlebrakes and More muzzle brake. MNM Zero333 give you solid advice about the scope and base.

what would your choice be for a rail. thanks Richard

Maybe a dumb question, but if you have 55moa of scope travel with and a 20 moa base wouldn't you get 47 moa of elevation?

My Math was off by 10 moa. With the Vortex GE on a 20moa rail you'll have about 47moa elevation travel left to play with. Plenty good enough for 1,000 yards.

I think for the money, the magnification and the optical quality, it's hard to beat the Vortex.
Other things that make a difference in your choice would be How much magnification do you want/need and your budget.

Now that I think of it. If this is a rifle just to have fun with at moderate ranges, you'll be good with the Golden Eagle in Burris XTR signature rings on top of a 20 moa rail. I like the Weaver 20moa rail because it's not expensive and has a recoil lug lip on it's underside.
