Advice on this project... 6mm Br

I plan on building a 6mm Br No-Turn Norma chambered neck set up for factory 105 Scenars and other VLD's based on a Barnard P action. I'm think a barrel length of 31 inches from Broughton medium taper Palma perhaps a 30 inch Krieger Medium Taper Palma. I want Warner Tool to do the work on the action and barrel that will be put into a Prone Master Class stock. My question is simple do you think this rig will be good for 600-1000yard shooting or should I change some of my specs?

You have top notch componets and smith so I would bet it would be very accurate. Whether its the best choices depends on what you want to do with it.

Thanks for the help...

Hi Conner.

I shot a national record with a Barnard action with a Broughton barrel at 31 inches chambered for 6mmBRX. I have won 600yd matches with it as well. I can assure you that there is no more accurate combination available for the prone shooter. Please feel free to contact me regarding rifle/reloading for the cartridge or any other questions about shooting prone. I would strongly suggest you try a Mastin offset prone stock to see how it feels. See gun of the week # 20.

Oh, I have seen your rifle... In fact I was first considering cloning it exactly except to fit my personal needs. However, after trying the Mastin Stock out on a rifle at my local range I didn't find it as comfortable as the Masterclass Stock that another shooter had so I decided on that combination.

As I'm only going to use the 6mm BR Norma chamber and not the improved BRX do you think the 31 or 32 inch barrel will give a my caliber choice any benefit or should I go with a standard 30 inch barrel and save the extra muzzle weight and get some what stiffer barrel? I'm pretty set on the Broughton Barrel with the five lands canted rifling design.

Congrulations on your Record too.

Thanks Conner.

The Dasher or BRX will give you another 100 to 130 fps more over the standard case. This is very important at 1000 yards. A very use full rule of exterior ballistics is as follows: for bullets with BCs around .5, a 100fps increase in velocity is equivalent to a 10% increase in BC.

Forming brass is easy and you will be competitive at 600 yards wile fire forming.

I'm aware of the Dasher or BRX's performance, I'm just currently not able to swing the budget for all the necessary reloading gear. So, I need a cartridge that I can purchase factory ammo for and the Lapua Factory Ammo in 6mm BR is supposedly extremely accurate. Once I get out of college I plan on reloading and rebarrling the rifle to a 6mm BRX. Thanks for the information on the exterior ballistic rule.

Still do you see any forseeable improvement if I use 31 or 32 inch barrel using the standard chamber over that of a say 30 inch barrel?

Hi Conner.

I think you will find in quite short order that the factory ammunition is rather expensive. If you are going to save anywhere in the project, I say get a Douglas barrel. The first barrel will be used in all reality to learn to shoot the gun. Even with the standard case, reloading is the only way to go. 30 inches is fine with the standard case. A longer sight radius via an extension is in your best interest.

Since your set on the 6mmbr, I won't mention any other choices. However it may be difficult to procure lapua factory ammo in 6br...and when you do buy as much as your budget allows. Save your brass and when you can afford to buy some dies and a press...have at it.

I just had a rifle built by the Warners. Email them or call them. Be prepared to wait...but you'll get the best!

After talking with them about other possible barrels...I have a Kreiger on my 6.5x.284...they informed me about these guys!

I was considering an Obermeyer for the next tube.

Talk to Alan on the action...they will work with a barnard, but after emailing them I went with a Stolle Panda.

You won't be disappointed!

Actually, I've already emailed Alan and Dan Warner about the idea about a month ago... They said the Barnard was a great choice in actions. But they didn't talk about this barrel maker you supplied the link for. Perhaps, they felt I had already made up my mind on the Broughton or Krieger barrel. I think I like this company that makes 5R I've always heard great things about the 5R rifling concept. Perhaps, I'll give it a try!

A 5R 6mmBR sounds sort of neat to me..
