Advice on a dead horse (sub $700 scope)

I looked around but got a little overwhelmed.
I need a new scope for a long range f class rig. It needs to be mil/mil and Variable power. I like fancy reticles, but dont need them really. At least 20x prefer 30+.
I have an Athlon Helos Btr and am fairly happy with it. But feel like I should try something else also.
Any recomendations?
Least expensive to same end is a plus!
Thanks much

I'd extend the budget a hair and get the new Ares ETR 4.5-30 which will be available in a month or two.

I just got a Midas TAC 4-16x44, the turrets and overall quality went up a few notches, except for the reticle I like it better than my Ares BTR 4.5-27x50.

Unless it's a model that comes with 0.05 mil adjustments (most don't), mil/mil adjustments are really NOT what you want for "long range F-class". The typical 0.1 mil turret adjustments available on most mil/mil scopes are much more coarse than 0.125 MOA turrets adjustments favored by most F-Class shooters. That much of an adjustment will put you out of the X-ring with any more than a single click in any direction, which is not ideal.

You really want to be looking at a scope that has something more like 40X to 60X upper magnification range, and comes with 0.125 MOA turret adjustments. The Sightron III 8-32X and 10-50x are among the better less expensive options. The next rung up on the price ladder would probably be the Vortex Golden Eagle and the Nightforce 12-42 BR scopes, which are both excellent choices. From that point on, you're talking primarily Nightforce Competition, Kahles and March scopes, which are certainly not inexpensive options.

gstaylorg was obviously one smart cookie---i got alot out of his posts-- I hope you do as good a job as he in filling those shoes:D:D:D:D

Having just acquired a Sightron III 8-32X56 with target dot I can say it's the best scope I've purchased for longer range shooting. I can't afford the high priced spread on a retiree's budget but it's a lot of bang for the buck. Easily see 22 cal holes at 300 yds when the Texas summer mirage isn't too bad.

Why a variable when fixed power scopes have more repeatable adjustments?

Why MIL spaced adjustments when F class target rings are yards away and sized in inches?

I'd get a Weaver T36; possibly the best bang for your bucks.
