Advice Needed: Mauser 98 Pre-Thread to Model 70

I have a nice -8mm sporter barrel that is pre-threaded for a Mauser 98, but NOT chambered. I would like to have it installed on a late Model 70 push-feed if possible. I know that the minor thread diameter of the Mauser is close to the major thread diameter of the Model 70. Are there any smiths out there that have done this? I do not want to set this barrel back any more that I have to so I would like to see the existing threaded shank utilized if possible. This is for an 8mm-06AI project I've been wanting to do for awhile now. Can this be done? Any advice from those who know greatly appreciated.

which mauser, lg or small ring, the difference is about .120
lg ring major=1.100
sm ring major = .980

winchester major =1.000

if it is a lg ring the minor will be around .998. So if that is correct than it should work

Sorry, should have been more clear - the barrel is pre-threaded for a large ring 98.

You should be able to do it, some consideration has to be given to the existing threads that they were cut properly. If everything is straight & square you should be OK. However, you won't be 100% sure until the win threads are cut.

This is a straight forward no sweat job. Set it up correctly and you are good to go. Do you need someone to do it?

Jim is right, very straight forward job indeed. The old threads have no bearing at all on the cutting of the new threads. The barrel has to be chuked up and indicated off of the current chamber wall as well as the muzzle end. Then you cut the old threads down to the proper diameter of 1" from 1.100" and resquare the shoulder by taking off just enough to get the proper shank length for the Winchester. After the new shank is cut, you will still have the remnants of the Mauser threads in the shank (about .030" deep per side), but nothng to worry about. When the new threads are cut, you'll never even know the old threads were there.
